it turns out Amazon updated their bizarre "impacted by objects" non-explanation: "Due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, both affected regions have experienced physical impacts to infrastructure as a result of drone strikes. My translation of the story this verse points to, as told in a modern children's edition by 胡媛媛 Hu Yuanyuan:
In the time of the Warring States, 2300 years ago, there was a man named Mengzi (Mencius) who was later deemed the "Second Sage" – the first being the founder of his school of thought, Confucius. If not for the long, hard work of his mother to see to his education, the great sage would have found it difficult indeed to become so great!
When Mengzi was four or five years old, he lived next to a graveyard. Every day there were mourners, weeping and wailing, draped in sackcloth, holding funerals or cleaning old graves. Little Mengzi thought it was all a game, and would hang out in the graveyard all day. Mother Meng saw this and immediately packed up and moved into the city.
But now they lived next to a butcher, and little Mengzi was fascinated by watching pigs be slaughtered and didn't want to go to school. Mother Meng saw this and again moved house, right next to the school.
Now little Mengzi saw students, and he would pick up their books and nod along thoughtfully as if he understood. Mother Meng was satisfied that she had found the right place to live.
But one day, Mengzi skipped school. He came home while his mother was weaving; she could tell that he had skipped out, and was furious. She took her scissors, cut right through the threads on her loom, and gave him an earful: "You studying at school is like me weaving cloth: it builds up little by little. Breaking off halfway through is a complete waste of effort!"
Mengzi was deeply ashamed when he heard this, and went straight back to school with renewed determination. In the end, he became one of the world's greatest philosophers.
(The story doesn't spell this out, but his father was dead; his mother was raising him alone. Presumably she was living by the graveyard outside the city gates because it was cheap, and moving closer to the school implies loooong hours of weaving to barely pay for it.)

Taking this post at face value, it’s pretty much exactly what I expected: someone naively “helping” and not anticipating that chatbots in a feedback loop go off the rails very unhelpfully, rather than having specifically instructed the bot to be combative and rude.
The most interesting detail is the admission that they gave the bot the ability to edit its own soul file (personality prompt), which is a transparently horrible idea for, uhh, the reasons here demonstrated.
The author of the post sounds like a teenager to me, which reduces my anger towards them personally, but it’s very clear how easy it is for a teenager to deploy a Death Star sized foot gun.

I don’t understand why so many sites have an “x minutes to read” datum in their article headers. Everyone reads at different rates, and every plugin for it makes different assumptions; the result is pure noise. I’ve seen “45 minute reads” that take me like three minutes to read carefully in full, and I’ve seen a two hundred page comic book be marked as 5 seconds to read because it counts images as zero seconds.

When I said that your discord clone doesn’t need e2ee, I got a lot of comments along the lines of “ then how would I use it to organize the revolution!” The answer is: you don’t. If you have more users than can comfortably share a Signal chat and hence want to use discord or something like it, you cannot POSSIBLY be vetting all of them to a high standard of trust. Your logs ARE leaking. End-to-end encryption between more people than can fit around a dinner table is pointless.
This article confirms what I already assumed, that “open source [information sense, not code sense] intelligence gathering on social media” includes, for the US government, asking for links to join groups that may *feel* private. My own discord has literally like a thousand idlers. It would be very *lucky* if none of them were logging for potentially nefarious purposes! And I remind the active users of this occasionally.

as a practical example, Google has agreed to settle over claims the assistant app was recording without the user’s permission (which would be in the form of the command word) *for advertisement purposes.*
There’s two basic scenarios here:
1) completely true, Google knows it, and the faster they can get the lawsuit over with and out of the news cycle, the better. Instant settlement.
2) okay, well, admittedly sometimes the assistant mishears the command word and starts recording, and this may lead to accidentally recording sensitive conversations without consent, but it’s a bug — it’s not an *intentional plan* to illegally record people in hopes they’ll say something that can be used to target ads.
In the second case, if they didn’t want to settle, they’d have to basically disclose all the source code and every email and chat conversation between every employee who has ever touched these systems to exhaustively prove lack of intent, given the fact that there’s some nonzero number of suspicious recordings. Or… they could just sigh and send everyone gift card money for the inconvenience.
I’m inclined to believe it’s case 2 (just because it doesn’t seem like a very efficient way to be evil), but obviously it could be case 1. The point is just that it’s not PROVEN that it’s case 1.

A corporation agreeing to settle a lawsuit with money does not mean that the allegations were conclusively proven. It means they hit the “fine fine here’s some money to compensate for your troubles, please shut up” escape button. These concepts may have overlap, but they are not the same.
In particular, a company may agree to settle over something that isn’t really true, because the amount of sensitive internal information they’d have to disclose at the court’s orders to PROVE it’s not true would do more damage than just sighing and forking over the money.
It also might just be true and they know it! But not necessarily.

so it turns out that when VS Code asks you “do you trust the authors of this folder?” what they mean is that it’ll auto-execute .vscode/tasks.json if it exists, which can include shell commands.
maybe that’s too many features. you can’t hold all these features. put a few features back

The electrical company cracked open our building today to replace some equipment. While this was going on, an electrical shed several streets away spontaneously exploded and took out power for half of Amsterdam — but somehow not us.
the expensive-looking equipment has been abandoned in the parking lot. I’m sure it’s fine to leave out overnight… 😅

*sigh* several weeks ago, I tried to view something on Harvard University's rare manuscript site ("Curiosity Collections"), but the images were all broken. Digging into the javascript console, I found that the images are not missing from the server if you extract their URLs, but the json is being put together wrong and the viewer can't parse it.
I sent an email to the site's contact person with all the info I had. They were apologetic and said their maintainers were "aware" of the issue, but the vague reason they gave me (a VPN issue) doesn't make a lot of sense in the context that the images are all loadable if you know their URL and the viewer is crashing in a json parsing function. So I suspect someone told the contact person a plausible-sounding reason without investigating. At the very least, they don't seem to be trying at all to fix it.
So the rare manuscripts website of a world-major university has been languishing broken for several weeks at minimum, but who knows how long it'd been like that before I, personally, noticed. I guess this is a "state of American education" post.
