I also think that the Alberta NDP has been great in consistently standing up for trans rights, and it's not a new stance for them at all; I remember very clearly them standing completely firm on students' rights to live as their gender identity in school (as well as on students' rights to form gay-straight alliance groups at school), all the way back in 2016 when they were in government: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/alberta-education-gender-lgbtq-gsa-guidelines-1.3402300

I genuinely wish some of the federal NDP leadership candidates were better at highlighting the good work that the Alberta NDP did, during the years when they were in government. They were able to take some very important steps towards economic diversification and climate protection and workers rights, while standing firm on protecting LGBTQ people, all during a really bad recession. Even McPherson from Alberta doesn't spotlight the work enough, I think.

I think one of the most important things for the federal NDP leader, whoever wins, is to make sure that the relationship with the Alberta NDP is good, and to make sure that they win the provincial election next year. It's not just important for Alberta, but for all of Canada who cares about trans rights, protecting healthcare, labour rights, decarbonization, judicial independence, immigrants rights, etc. etc. Every one of these is an NDP value. The Alberta government is pushing to the extreme right in all these directions and is trying to import MAGA-style policies for tearing down all of these things, to Canada, and the speed at which they are doing it is devastating. It's not just an Alberta thing, it should concern all of us.

With the news that people are moving to Xiaohongshu due to uncertainty about the future of TikTok and the changes to Meta's content policies, and that people are now really interested in learning Mandarin: I would encourage you to check out the active Chinese-language communities right here on the fediverse as well, such as the public forum at https://ovo.st/club/board (@ board @ ovo.st ), and the instance https://m.cmx.im/about. Or, perhaps, you can follow my recent favourite fediverse account, @labor@social.datalabour.com, which collects news about modern Chinese labour issues that you will never find on Chinese social media platforms.

In general I think there is a huge lack of understanding among western users about how much Chinese social media and Chinese tech companies are intertwined with the government, a lack of understanding or engagement with Chinese social issues which are heavily censored on all Chinese social media platforms, and a mistake belief that "well, Chinese social media can't be much worse than the American ones". I had to mute the discourse around TikTok for my own sanity because there was so much complete misunderstanding around privacy, censorship, and the nature of these companies. It's like seeing people say "we don't want to use apps run by (american) fascists, so we will flock to an app that shares all its data with a fascist government, and actively censors all topics unfavourable to that government". It makes no sense.

Of course, I think it is good that people are engaging with Chinese people, finally, as people, and not as just abstractions. I think it is also good that people have an incentive to learn my native language. I just wish people would use that to engage with and listen to the Chinese people who have been posting here, all along.
