I know this is probably about Australia, but I immediately imagine 19th-century high/low-tech steampunk.

I've been disheartened, over the past decade at my somewhat head-up-its-own-ass university, to find that standing up for principles everyone says they value--democracy, transparency, science, inclusion, anti-authoritarianism, etc.--has made me a lot more enemies than friends. I'm convinced that I'm on the administration's shit list, and will never receive a sabbatical or promotion. Sadly, a lot of my fellow faculty also treat me like persona non grata apparently due to me advocating for their rights.

I'm pretty sure, from patterns and occasional statements, that a lot of my colleagues don't want carefully-crafted policies, the rule of law (or at least what passes for law in a small university), democracy, or transparency because they want the option to use the injustice for their own purposes at some point. They don't want to be tied to reasonable standards because they want the ability to throw those standards away if there's someone they don't like, or some rule they personally hate, or some shitty behavior they could personally benefit from.

I grew up very religious. I wasn't a fundamentalist or anything, but I took exception to exceptions: If we preach loving everyone, then why aren't we fucking loving everyone? If disobedience to God's chosen servants is a super bad sin, then why do we only punish it when the disobedience goes politically to the left?

Anyway, this is a subtoot about a bunch of my colleagues publicly saying some serious falsehoods about the "responsible AI use" we're all being pressured to adopt: It's not actually bad for the environment or labor; those concerns are overblown and a little wonky, don't you think? And genAI is not trained on copyrighted or paywalled data! What makes you think that? That's not how these things work! Didn't you read what [billionaire] said last month? Paranoid much?"

So I think I have a few more unsympathetic colleagues after my reply, stuffed with links to things the AI bros have actually said and done.

Anyone want a cool domain name? If you're a cool person you can have xenologue.com for $0 (or $1 or 1 euro or whatever, if I have to charge something to transfer it). Of course you'll be responsible for renewals after you own it, but I don't need it and I've been sitting on it for almost 20 years. Ideal for someone who speaks or is interested in one or more foreign languages? #offer #domainname #CoolPeopleOnly #free

@cstross@wandering.shop The "jibe" vs "jive" thing still confuses me. I've read explainers over the years that have claimed each of them is correct, or both are. I also don't know whether "home in on" or "hone in on" is right (though I suspect it's the former).

My goal was not to define "neurodiversity" or find out the "reality" of what is and is not neurodiverse. My goal was to find out what people on the fediverse believe neurodiversity is, or--more pointedly--what they want it to be. The label itself is (IMO) not well grounded in science, and maybe can't be. No two humans have the same kind of brain, so if we want a big category like "neurodiverse" (implicitly excluding many people from the category), there have to be lines drawn in the sand. The boundaries are extremely fuzzy, and the underlying realities seem to be dimensions, no categories. I think I understand the need for the term, and I support continuing to discuss who it does and doesn't apply to, though I think that is a social and political activity, not primarily a scientific one. To be clear, I believe this kind of social and political activity is important, and has done a lot of good so far.

It’s come to my attention that some of you don’t wash your rice before cooking it. There seems to be a correlation between those that wash coming from a ‘rice’ culture (ex: east Asia) vs those that do

@octothorpe@mastodon.online Nothing new, but I decided to do a quick hypothesis test on this (proportions test, done by chi-square). The poll results are rounded, so getting the Ns is a little imprecise but Population estimates from sample... Rice culture: 76% washers Bread culture: 56% washers Proportions are not statistically significantly different (X2 = 3.55, 1df, p = .06) but pretty close to being so. The proportions (both observed and estimated) are in favor of rice culture folks being more likely to wash their rice, but the sample size (for rice culture) is really small, as you said. For fun I did a little sensitivity test. If these proportions held in a sample of 450 (instead of 361), you would have p < .05. Anyway, rice culture wins in the sample but the amount by which it wins is not enough to conclude that the same is true in the population. Just barely not enough.
