Nope. The old-school way to do it worked perfectly and didn’t do any of that crap.

The laws of thermodynamics and fluid dynamics are both strongly against carbon removal. Upstream solutions are much more efficient. Nobody wants that shit but big corporations offering expensive, infrastructure-intensive boondoggles to milk the taxpayer.

From the intro to the study: “In the OMNIVEG study, 14 healthy, physically active men followed a traditional MedDiet for 3 weeks and a vegan MedDiet for 4 weeks, with a 1-week washout.” Small sample size. Highly selective criteria for choosing the subjects. Very short test duration. The impact assessments are opaque, arbitrary and massively over-extrapolated. None measure actual impacts, only projected impacts. This study is a methodological mess: all noise and no signal. Do it again in a long-term longitudinal study with a large, diverse sample population, and measure real impacts, then we’ll actually know something.

Marx’s view was that socialism would develop as an emergent phenomenon (a modern term, not one he used) to correct the contradictions of capitalism. But in both Russia and China, they tried to impose socialism on what were essentially feudal societies. The result was state capitalism, the industrial revolution imposed at gunpoint with no control of the means of production by the workers. And, as capitalist societies, both countries continued the imperialism and nationalism of their predecessor regimes. And this isn’t an after-the-fact critique: contemporary socialists such as Rosa Luxembourg made these observations at the time. Skipping a developmental stage doesn’t work.

Proton is based in Switzerland, which is not a Nordic country. Neither's Lithuania, but at least the Baltic is Nordic-adjacent. The notion that the home country of a company operating in multiple countries matters? Only if that home country's regulatory regime can be trusted. In the case of Proton, a US request to the Swiss government led to a Swiss warrant that forced Proton to disclose the details of a user who had criticised the fascist government in the US. Many countries will do favors like that for other countries without any sort of due process. The best you can hope for is that the vendors' system architecture retains the minimum user information needed to sustain operations.

And yeah, the cookie-banners bullshit isn’t required, it was just passive aggression by sites butthurt that they couldn’t intrusively track their users so easily anymore.

those states are represented by binary numbers. The states represent binary numbers, not the other way around. www.britannica.com/technology/bit-communications A bit is a binary digit. That’s what “bit” is an abbreviation for. That is, it’s either a 1 or a 0. It’s a logical thing, not a physical thing. It’s a unit of information. The embodiment of that bit is the physical state of a certain tiny, addressable chunk of silicon. And there could be any of several other embodiments: the position of toggle switches, chalk marks on a board, pits on a metallic surface in a DVD, voltage in a wire at a particular time. The particular embodiment is an engineering choice that is distinct from the information itself.
