@gabe Yes, but… it has become synonymous with a firm line of last resort; ‘this much and no further’ - one possible origin I saw mentioned was an officer at the Alamo making a mark in the dirt with his sword.
Yet very few things are as easy to remove or replace as a line in the sand, and the politicians who use the phrase are often the first ones to sacrifice principles to expediency.
