I share all your questions w.r.t. Mastodon, and that's why I ended up opening my own instance.

I understand it's not for everybody, but in the case of Universities it's just a matter of time for them to start opening their own instances to host their academics.

It would be not only an arguably safe place for academia, but also a great solution to verify and back authors.
