Fuck, it's just 'madman' this and 'unhinged' and 'off his rocker' and 'psychotic' and we just don't have any words for this, do we, that don't lean all the way into "he's gotta be mentally ill!"

I'll say it again:

Mental illness is what we have dealing with him. Motherfucker has repeatedly traumatized us and the entire fucking world. Abuse is all he knows.

He's an abuser.

That's the word you're looking for.

And he's insecure. Most of his cabinet is. They are all terrified to change shoe sizes, FFS.

He's a insecure abuser and cult leader who has things going very bad for him right now, and he's flailing and lashing out the way any abuser and cult leader will when they see that their strategies are no longer working.

Sure, he has absolutely no self-restraint, no executive functions that tell him when to stop bloviating about bullshit, he has never gone to therapy and has a huge complex about a lot of things (penis size, windmills, etc) which might encourage you to start psychoanalyzing him, to explain what's "wrong" with him. To diagnose him with 'madness' or some kind of 'disease'....

As if an abuser needs or deserves that abandonment of accountability.

You could argue that abusers are fundamentally damaged, that there is something 'wrong' with them. That 'normal people don't act like this' or whatever it is that you say but what you don't realize you're doing at a time like this is throwing every person with mental illness under the bus.

And we have a need, our own obsession, with proposing explanations for why someone does something. And it's a quick trip to 'there must be something wrong with his brain.'

It's the same fucking brain that banned Muslims in his first term, threw out wild accusations of fraud based on nothing other than his feels, separated families as a policy of cruelty, and declared that sticking ultraviolet light up your bum might cure you of the covids.

If you want a single guiding thing, like if you're looking for the reason, the mechanism, the thing that drives Trump, MAGA, and the entire Right, it's not "madness".

It's insecurity.

That's it. It's the fear that 'everyone is laughing at them'. It's the desire to be so 'tough' and 'manly' that no one will ever dream of laughing at you again.

So it's 'department of war' and 'hardcore' videos of video game violence and bro high-fives and 'finally we an say the r-word again' and tradwives, and all the other insecurity-driven fetishes of the Right.

The absolute terror that they are, underneath it all, small and shrinking. And that we can all see it.

And so they overcompensate.

If you want to psychoanalyze, fine, but do it in the context of truly trying to understand, not to apply a dismissive pejorative label and dehumanize everyone with mental illness.
