To me, Cliff Richard and Freddie Mercury always seemed an unlikely pair of friends. The thing I didn't know was that Richard was born in India and because of his accent and complexion he, strangely, faced anti-Indian racism when his family moved back to Britain. Freddie Mercury's family was from India and he was educated there in a British type boarding school. When he fled to Britain with his family from Zanzibar he also had to deal with racism. So Cliff and Freddie actually had a weirdly shared/similar background.
