Recently, members of the anti-Taliban Afghan diaspora clashed once again on social media over the ongoing conflict between the Taliban and the Pakistani establishment. It is important to note that this is not the first time that anti-Taliban voices have diverged; such internal disagreements have largely hindered the formation of a cohesive and effective anti-Taliban opposition.
The most recent social media dispute began with a post by
@ZahraJoya on X who is running
@RukhshanaMedia. Notably, there is often no clear distinction between journalists, analysts, activists, political and armed anti-Taliban fronts, intelligence-operated troll accounts, and impersonators on social media. In some cases, a single individual may simultaneously present themselves as a journalist, a peace and rights activist, a warlord’s affiliate, and a promoter of armed conflict.
Many within the diaspora, shaped by the last two decades of Afghanistan’s troubled democracy, engage in debates without sufficient contextual knowledge or background, often relying on misinformation to support their arguments. This fragmented and sometimes misinformed anti-Taliban bloc faces significant challenges in achieving any meaningful impact. Furthermore, the frequent use of abusive or inflammatory language, rather than well-reasoned argumentation, adds another layer to this problem.
