If I could tell my past self that we found a way to make electronics waterproof and still have ports, but then we got rid of all but one port, I don’t think I would have believed it.

@kevinctofel@hachyderm.io It's unauthorized use of name/likeness, so you have legal grounds. If you don't want to get lawyers involved immediately, may I suggest a somewhat absurd half-measure. Make it clear you're going to bill for misappropriation of likeness. Count up each instance and charge let's say $5000 per. If it's not fixed, take the first instance to small claims court (no lawyer needed) to get a judgement. Still no fix? Sell it to collections to prove you're serious. Next step, just call a lawyer

Okay, "quiet vacationing" kinda works in this case, but the “quiet x” thing is officially overused now. I’m this close to writing an article about Quiet Loudness...
Oh, damn it, that should be a thing. It's when saying nothing is saying everything, like when ideas are pitched and nobody wants to get behind them, or when companies ask employees to fill out surveys and nobody does it because they fear retribution.

I’ve committed myself to living a life where I’m regularly amused by how many things around me will magically stick to each other.
Thank you, magnets. You're still as fun as ever.

Ready for another round of “did <company's> marketing mislead people or is the media blowing it out of proportion?”
https://www.theverge.com/2023/10/31/23940060/apple-event-shot-on-iphone-behind-the-scenes
It's not that either side is wrong, but let's be honest, it doesn't matter which cameras are used, Apple would have needed a ton of very expensive equipment for those shots. But given how much lighting was used on a controlled set, most of those shots (drone excluded) weren't much harder than shooting in daylight.

Anybody remember when opening an article without an ad blocker took less RAM and CPU than running Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop at the same time.
Ahh, the good 'ol days.

Let me get this straight. This 45-day stopgap bill is going to mean we’ll have another shutdown threat in… mid-November? Right before Thanksgiving and Black Friday?
So there's a chance we'll have a government shutdown right before one of the biggest travel days of the year, so TSA agents and air traffic controllers will be forced to work unpaid. And then millions of government employees will be afraid to spend money on the biggest shopping day of the year. These people are clinically insane.

@jbqueru@fosstodon.org In my experience, ChatGPT has only reliably made code with fairly convincing variable names, and it usually gets the right names for framework classes.
But like you, I've found it wildly inadequate at generating usable code. It tries to use method signatures that don't exist, doesn't bother to fill in object fields, and skips other important steps that, like you said, are the hard part.
I think of ChatGPT as an idea generator when I don't already know what to do, but nothing more.

@jbqueru@fosstodon.org I’ve had this experience virtually every time I try to use one, even for C#, Swift, and especially AppleScript. It boggles the mind how anybody is supposedly getting near-perfect code.
The only time I've had semi-useful results is when I ask for something that matches one of the existing questions on SO, and then the result is usually a mostly-identical version of the top answer.
In effect, LLMs are almost like better search engines, if they weren't also prone to being wrong so often.

@scuttlefield@pdx.social @corbin@toot.community I think Mastodon gets a pass now because most people burned through their energy last year and there aren't any new and "clever" things to complain about.
At the end of the day, there's just not much about the other services that's attracting me to them. I'm interested in some of the software dev circles that kicked up on Threads right away, but it feels like too many people are just there to raise a hand and say, "I'm Here," without having much else to add.

If you spend a lot of your day typing, I strongly recommend against slicing into your pinky finger in a kitchen accident. Typing with a bandage on is the worst.

@jccpalmer Alternate strategy... Use demotivational self-hacks to make using the phone less pleasant.
* Set your phone to desaturate color on your screen.
* Change your ringtone and notification sounds to N'Sync songs.
* Set your background to Louis C.K.
* Switch your browser to Opera
(all equally bad)
and if all else fails...
* put very cheap stickers on the back, then tear them off so there's still paper and adhesive. You'd have to be bleeding out before willingly touching that phone again.

@skeletonpup@lgbtqia.space Reolink has at least one model with a microSD slot, the Argus 3 Pro. There is a cloud service, but it's not very useful anyway. You can activate the camera and then remove the network connection, and it should rely on the SD card from there on. I haven't personally tried this, so I don't know how convenient this is, but it can be made to meet your criteria.
Alternatively, Synology makes cameras that send video to a local NAS, and there's no reason to think it's going anywhere else.

@jccpalmer I’m not sure if this helps at all, but I can think back to two women I’ve dated that both complained I wasn't possessive enough.
I mean, one of them literally wanted me to jump out of the car to fight a guy in the street because he hit on her at a red light. To oversimplify her general interests, she wanted to date a caveman.
The other wasn't so, simple; but she was accustomed to dating controlling men, and she believed those were signs of caring/love. I learned to fake it for her.

@scuttlefield@pdx.social I assume you mean the privacy report, which includes permissions? When you look at the detailed views, both are pretty obscene, but Google's buckets are less repetitive, and they're more broadly-defined.

As everybody rushes to try out Threads, and either shouts about how cool it is, how much they hate it, or how exploitive the permissions are, but the detail so few people mention is how it's conspicuously devoid of ads. You know, the thing that practically defines the experience of FB and IG now.
Nobody thinks that's a mistake, it's obviously not. But before committing to stick around, just imagine what it'll be like in a year when 3-4 ads are always visible and mixed in with regular posts.
