Reminder: PayPal was founded by Elon Musk and Peter Thiel. The company makes $5,230,000,000/year in profit. If this is how you pay for things, or send money to people, you might want to take a moment and pause to think about if you want to support this corporation. If you do, cool, you do you. I'm just asking that people make an intentional choice here.

For those who are posting about #SmallWeb Have you read "Small Is Beautiful: Economics as if People Mattered" by E.F. Schumacher (published in 1973)?

I hesitate to ask this on here, but are there any Fediverse apps that let you see your feed with an algorithm other than chronological? I don't necessarily want to see a person more often just because they post more frequently, nor do I want to miss things posted by someone who only posts occassionally, or at different times than when I happen to tune in. And I want to be in control of the algorithm for my own feed. I don't wasn't to delegate this to my server admin. Please be kind.

There's a joint presentation from the Illinois #Luddite Society and #Makerspace Urbana on the 14th (next Saturday) at 2PM at the local Independent Media Center (#IMC). Come hear people suggest that: 1.) technology should serve human wellbeing 2.) the judgement that many dominant technologies fail to meet this standard, and 3.) what you can do about it I'm going to mention lots of #OpenSource and #SelfHosted tech from texting with #Meshtastic to privacy respecting smart thermostats.

TL;DR Support practical solutions to clean energy and don't let the nuclear issue splinter our efforts when we agree on SO MANY things. Thanks.

I'd encourage those who are seriously concerned with #climate change, #pollution, and clean #energy to push for making the alternatives to fossil fuels and nuclear power more economical. That's how we got over 90% of new generation capacity to be solar. It's not that power companies are altruistic or that people are willing to pay more for electricity generated by solar panels, it's just the cheapest option.

Furthermore, demand response eliminates the need to gas peaker plants, which are expensive, emit more air pollution than baseload gas plants, and are more likely to be in historically disadvantaged communities.

The idea is that nuclear can power us when the sun and the wind are lacking, and reduce their output when the intermittent sources are plentiful. Before someone criticizes me and tries to put words in my mouth because I called nuclear "carbon-free power", I'd like to point out that there are other solutions here. We don't currently have large scale energy storage. There are people working on that, and not just in the form of lithium batteries.

Production and consumption always match. If a bunch of people turn off their electric heat at once, there's a surge until the supply side can adjust downwards. The same is true in the opposite direction where the power can dip when there's a sudden large demand. The most relatable is to sometimes see the lights flicker when your home air conditioning kicks on. That's why Mircosoft is restarting a nuclear plant. It does provide carbon-free power 24/7.

Getting more energy generation capacity is key not just to satisfying new demand, but also for decarbonizing the grid for the existing demand as well. The most cost effective way to do that is solar photovoltaic. Period. But people use electricity when it's dark, and Microsoft is no exception. And that's where the problem lies: matching energy production with consumption.

Let's talk about #Microsoft reaffirming its commitment to 100% of its electricity consumption with #renewable #energy purchases. First, this is a good thing, especially in light of their plans for data center expansion. It's not just empty promises, they actually did achieve this for the first time last year. Look, I don't like everything Microsoft does, but they do deserve some credit here. Having said that, matching is not the same as 24/7 carbon-free electricity... https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/climate-energy/microsoft-keep-buying-enough-renewable-energy-match-all-its-electricity-needs-2026-02-18/

I posted the monthly recap of what happened at the Repair Cafe events this month. If you're willing to print some fliers and take them to your knitting club, technology enthusiasts meetup, church, the regulars at the pub, or whomever else you hang out with, it'd be a huge help to us (and the people you share it with). Details on how to do so are at the end of the blog post below. ❤️ https://makerspaceurbana.org/2026/02/23/repair-cafe-february-2026/ cc: @makerspace_urbana@tech.lgbt @righttorepair

I decided to start today reading a book (nonfiction) instead of being on my computer or phone.

It's now been several hours and I'm still reading (this is highly irregular, as I am most certainly not a bookworm)!

In addition to being highly educational, it's also been a quite relaxing change of pace. I've managed to shake that feeling that I "should" be doing this or that.

#peace

If Toyota pulls this off, it means EVs with 620 mile range with batteries that can be charged in 10 minutes in either 2027 or 2028. That's going to basically mean checkmate for all the competition unless they are equally innovative.

It's that time of the month. Come on out to @makerspace_urbana@tech.lgbt on Thursday night to help repair things, bring something to repair, hang out and socialize, or any combination of the above.
