It's so heartwarming to see some parents refuse to give up on their children even when they are severely disabled, meanwhile some parents wanna disinherit their children for neurodivergence...

Language is so weird tbh. Like I’d feel comfortable saying I’m an American, but like “I’m a Chinese” sounds so like… gramatically wrong. Like, idk if its the -ese suffix. Or ifs its because Chinese can be 中国人，华人，中文，中国的，华裔，汉字，so it feels so like imprecise as a term, where as “I’m Chinese” is obviously refering to ethnicity (or nationality) When someone say “the Chinese”, like when they refer to China’s success or failures, as in “the Chinese have managed to do XYZ”, idk why, but I half expect the speaker to be subconciously racist for some reason… like I feel like that phrase is categorizing me into the CCP’s decisions… like as if they’re assuming I’m part of a monolith that doesn’t have independent thoughts or something. Maybe it’s just me and I’m overthinking this weird grammer rules.

Let me tell how how much people actually follow laws in China. I was born while the One Child Policy was in effect. My mother already gave birth to my older brother. Basically, my existence is illegal. As you can see, clearly I’m not dead. They didn’t kill me, just demanded my parents paid a massive fine and denied legal papers until they did so. Honestly if you just browse and don’t post anything too serious, are they really gonna go after everyone who use a VPN. I mean, say even if just 1% uses a VPN. That’s 1,400,000 people. Are they gonna lock up a million people? Really? Surely they have bigger fishes to catch. As for control of information, internarional phone calls aren’t blocked, you can send letters. My mom regularly call my aunts (aka: her sisters) in China. I heard the Covid QR codes being mentioned, afaik, the didn’t lose their teaching jobs nor ever got arrested. The overwhelming majority wouldn‘t even know how. It’s like adblocking. Do you know anyone irl that use adblockers? Seriously, I don’t know anyone that does except like maybe 1 perdon. But here we are, on a platform where practically everyone uses adblockers. Or in another analogy. Mainstream social media is like inside the GFW and Lemmy is like using VPN to bypass it. TLDR: Okay sorry if my point isn’t concise, I guess my point is: NPCs will just follow the wind, those who have the will to dig deeper will probably be able to bypass the censorship (provided that it’s not completely cut off from the outside internet)

How high is your proposed number? Why is Big = Bad? Proton have over 100 million users. Do we fine Proton AG for a bunch of shitheads abusing their platform and sending malicious email? How do they detect it if its encrypted? Force them to backdoor the encryption?

I know these signs might not seems like a lot, but as a 1.5-Gen immigrant that have lived here for most of my life, seeing these “immigrants are welcome” signs in the streets is a huge relief… it reminds me that I still have allies, that not everyone here is that hateful… it gives me hope…

Right now I don’t have a reddit account and I just lurk there, but if I really wanted to talk about, say, a specific TV show I like, or a Movie, or Anime, or a Book… that would not exist on the fediverse. It’s either just Reddit or maybe Discord. If I wanna talk about stuff from a non-white perspective, the best place I’d really find my people outside the great firewall is Reddit. I mean I the amount of Cantonese-speakers on Lemmy is like… single-digits

Lol, when I was kid whenever I “misbehave” (aka: doing any doing anything she doesn’t like), my mother (we’re Chinese American) would joke like “hey, how much do you think you’re worth if I sold you back to China? … probably nothing since you’re worthless” It was kinda joking, but I got half-scared too lol, couldn’t tell when she was serious. She also joked to me she that “found me in a trashcan somewhere” and took me in. What’s with these “jokes” lmfao 💀 I mean its funny but my soul dies a little 🫠
