AI’s don’t go crazy like that after 5 prompts. You need to spend weeks and weeks talking to them to corrupt the context so much that it stops following original guidelines. I wonder how does one do it? How do you spend weeks talking to AI? I had “discussions” with AI couple of times when testing it and it’s get really boring real soon. For me it doesn’t sound like a person at all. It’s just an algorithm with bunch of guardrails. What kind of person can think it actually has personality and engage with it on a sentimental level? Is it simply mental illness? Loneliness and desperation?

On reflection can FOSS even be bought Yes, you can pay developers to stop publishing new changes. Basically hire the people developing it and stop releasing the code. Community can try to still develop it independently.

I think most people here don’t really understand what’s going on here. Graphene OS is an Android mod with some extra security features designed to run on a hardened hardware. The main goal of Graphene OS is to protect users from some very specific attacks like some devices police uses to unlock phones or some targeted hacks by state actors. Unless you’re worried you may be targeted by such an attack and have some date you need to protect from them you don’t really need Graphene OS. You can run any of the other deGoogles Android mods on any hardware that supports it. You can already buy phones with pre-installed /e/ of iode ROMs. Many other phones support Lineage OS. Also, let’s keep in mind that GrapheneOS only supports Pixel because they don’t want to allow people to run their OS on hardware they don’t think is secure enough. It’s their choice not to support other phones. Also, Google still controls AOSP so this does not solve any of the bigger Android issues. Motorola forking AOSP and providing the resourced needed to keep the development going would be amazing news. This is just one phone maker promising to fulfill the security requirements of Graphene OS. It’s basically like Dell offering Ubuntu laptops. Good news but it will not have a big impact on the ecosystem.

GrapheneOS is open source, Motorola - just like anyone else - can make changes to it before they install it on their devices.

It’s not that FairPhone can’t run it. It’s that Graphene OS team doesn’t want people to run it on other phones. Their reasoning is that if people run Graphene OS on less secure hardware and get hacked it will damage the brand.

it could be almost managable to use. That was my take away last time I tried Sailfish OS. It mostly worked but there were some issues that were just too hard to ignore. For me the problem with a phone is that it’s for short but very frequent interactions. When there’s friction it becomes very annoying very fast. I don’t want it to almost do everything, I need to do very specific things well.

So I checked and my app done with Tauri uses 50MB of RAM. Simple PWAs I’ve checked using about:memory in Firefox use 40-50MB. Native apps done with egui or iced use ~25MB. The difference is really small and taking into account all the advantages of Tauri (more mature framework, easier packaging, better DX, better components library) I’m not very motivated to learn a native library just to save 20MB of RAM. PWA would be an interesting option (very similar to Tauri but maybe with easier distribution) but in the near future I want to work with Android Auto so I will need to work closely with native Android API and I already know how to do it with Tauri.

Firefox requires a PWA extension. And the extension requires a package from a 3rd party repo. Probably that’s why I missed it until now. It works nice on Android though. Maybe I should do a PWA… But it’s like… learn new tools, host it somewhere… I will think about it. Thanks!

You’re actually right, by now browsers have APIs to do most of the things apps do. Technically you could convert most apps to websites. I guess as a user I just don’t want all my apps to open a tab in my browser. I want to move apps between virtual desktops and monitors independently and I don’t want my app’s window to be clattered by all the menus from my browser. On mobile I also prefer switching between apps than between different tabs. For me the best compromise is: for system tools that don’t have to be cross platform and critical apps write native apps for small/medium cross platform apps use webviews like Webview2 or Tauri for big apps like Teams or Discord just use a website

It’s because people want cross-platform apps and web is the easiest way to do it. Yes, you have Flutter, KML or Qt but those are often hard to work with (looking at you, Flutter) or it’s difficult to find devs that can work with them. You choose web (JS/wasm) and you have plenty of devs familiar with the tools and you can support all the platform easily. I’m using Tauri for my personal projects because it’s fun and easy. I could use Qt but I don’t want to work with C++ or Python, at least not in my spare time. If anyone can recommend me a nice framework supporting Linux and Android and using modern language I might switch. I haven’t found one.

Email chains? You’re thinking about some early internet 40 years ago. Twitter has 20 years, Instragram 15. People were sharing fake images on social media long before AI. I just can’t imagine anyone responsible making decisions like stopping trains based on a single image on the internet. You know easy would it be to post an image of a forest fire on Twitter? You don’t even have to fake it, simply take an image from some other fire. You make decisions like that based on credible calls, not something you saw online.

The nostalgia factor is definitely real It’s not just nostalgia. Parents will take kids to McDonald’s as a reward and then they get a toy and it’s very quickly ingrained in them that “McDonald’s = fun”. Where I grew up we didn’t have it so for me it was always just another place with bad food but I remember once overhearing some kids on a bus talking excitedly about going McDonald’s and what they are going to order there. It was like a special occasion for them.
