Brute Force (1947)

There's something a big weird and … penile … about how his gun is poking out between the letters there, is it just me?

The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Postman_Always_Rings_Twice_(1946_film)

I love the background image, which is simple and powerful, and only hits the harder by being canted over 30º to the left. On the other hand, was there a sale on fonts that day because I count six, possibly seven in use here.

The Strange Woman (1946)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Strange_Woman

They really needed you to know that a movie was based on a book sometimes, didn't they? And that it was written by the guy who brought you "Leave Her To Heaven", note bottom right. She doesn't look strange to me, she just looks like she's the "I want to speak to your manager" type.

The Sellout (1952)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sellout_(film)
poster language: French
Love the colour, the contrasts, the angle, particularly the gloomy blue clock drawn by someone who had never seen a clock and didn't know that the two hands are normally different lengths…?

If that's a special type of Boxing clock I'm sure fans of the Noble Art will let me know.

Once again with these movies print journalists are sleazy and corrupt. The sister thing is really weird. The design is really powerful although the inset lower right looks terrible.

The Two Mrs. Carrolls (1947)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Two_Mrs._Carrolls
poster language: French
Great design. The European posters always seem more modern than the American ones. French tagline: "would you love the man who is going to kill you?".

This poster at least gets the name right, not like the other one which thought that "Carrolls" was the name.

This is amazing! Monroe as seductive Giant Woman, a kind of water goddess? Poster of the era are almost never symbolic like this. Water often symbolises the emotions in art and literature—and mysticism I suppose.

This one is quite mad. Two images which are essentially the same thing, on garishly over-coloured and the other under-coloured. The top one looks almost like a candid shot with a flash, it's pretty poor.

Nightfall (1956)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightfall_(1956_film)

That's a big claim. If I won the lottery that is what I'd do, by the way, go to the movies every day for the rest of my life. Or wait, no I'd build a home cinema, same difference.

I'm interested in Anne Bancroft being a "pick-up girl" who did the picking up. I always assumed that gendered insult meant that men found it easy to pick her up.

Spellbound (1945)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spellbound_(1945_film)

Every time I see posters for this movie I get the Siouxsie and the Banshees song stuck in my head. I'm sure it was inspired by this movie; geeky kids in the 70s in the UK got a really good grounding in arthouse film thanks to BBC2. Cool kids were smoking cigs and drinking cheap cider in the park and we were at home watching "Electra Glide In Blue".

Knock on Any Door (1949)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knock_on_Any_Door

These things aren't normally square, so maybe we can blame the awkward composition on that. What's the guy next to "ANY" doing? Dancing? Maybe I just think that because he looks like Elvis. And the woman hiking up her skirt to fix her lingerie-scaffolding, well that was practically the equivalent of full-frontal nudity back then.

City of Fear (1959)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_Fear_(1959_film)

Here I am, keen to put in a hour or so at the FNMP factory and I get…this. Uniquely terrible in every way, though I do rather like the pulp-novel-cover vibe of the thing at the bottom.

If you only have seven words of tagline for a film called "City Of Fear", maybe don't waste the first three on words which mean City of Fear, mmkay?

The Killers (1946)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Killers_(1946_film)

Does anyone really remember Ava Gardner these days? She's no longer a huge name like Monroe or even Jane Russell but she was absolutely a top star back then. Maybe marrying Frank was where she went wrong.

Suddenly (1954)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suddenly_(1954_film)

That nice Frankie, Dolly Sinatra's little boy, a bad guy!?! Clutches pearls.

I think this hits a little differently now we know a bit more about the C of the B.

I like the art style, the whole half-tone thing is unusual; there's nothing else like it in the collection that I can recall.

Film Noir Poster Bot favourite Mamie Van Doren again. Has she been thrown down onto that bed by turtleneck guy? There's so often a hint of sexual violence with these things. The slapdash colourisation makes it hard to make out what's even going on with her, her elbow is sticking up behind her shoulder?

Strangely, despite the ridiculous title, this is not some lame parody of a film noir starring Steve Martin, but an actual film noir. Whoever designed that lettering effect seems to be confused between embossing and engraving.

Sorry, Wrong Number (1948)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorry,_Wrong_Number

Cool composition, great colouring. That armed-forces-stencil font in the middle doesn't quite work for me. This movie starts well and then goes off into about an hour of nonsense about chemicals and the couple's tawdry backstory before the payoff, which is pretty solid.
