I am extremely sensitive to birch pollen -- but the birch haven't started blooming yet.

It's hazel and alder right now, and apparently, I am also allergic to one or both of those.

It's not only physical symptoms, like full body aches, itching, and coughing. It's also mental clarity and wellness.

I have an air purifier and have finally sourced replacements for the filter.

But after a long, dark winter, I still have to stay inside and can't open the windows even as the temperatures rise.

I had errands to run today, but I can't risk the ensuing suffering. The catkins of the trees will blow out the rest of their pollen in the next several days, as far as I can tell from predictions (https://silam.fmi.fi/pollen.html), so I will hope next weekend will be better and try to do those things then.

A package that I was waiting for delivery got stuck somewhere, so I never received it. I had to use the website chat to ask for a refund. It started out as a bot, but then I was directed to a human, and I don't think it was a just a "human." The service representative so cheerfully absconded with proper spacing, capitalization, and punctuation, it *had* to be a person. You always get to review the service after using the website chat, and so I made sure to emphasize that I was glad to talk to a person rather than a bot.

My friend in South Africa has gotten tired of me sending them posts that make fun of hyraxes. Most of them point out the strange vague quality of hyraxes, which do indeed appear unclassifiable except as "animal." A medieval interpretation of "beast," if you will, come to life in all its awkward, disproportionate glory.

My stress dreams often involve elevators, for some reason. Elevators that go to forbidden parts of a building -- and always where I do not want to be. Last night, the elevator operators were monkeys recruited as part of a Soviet experiment and had never been retired (nor had their little caps). I chose falling down an elevator shaft rather than deal with the monkeys but happily landed in a garden where aromatics were growing in a blighted, apocalyptic landscape. Still not sure if this was hopeful or not.

I had to laugh a little. "You don't understand because you're a critical thinker," I said. They looked at me with big eyes. "And many other people just are not."

With the warming weather comes a rise in anti-social behavior, such as driving cars with modified engines that tear through neighborhoods at night and playing loud music. I was woken up at 2 am by thumping amplified due to the structure of the courtyard. Sleep is healing for individuals but also for a society on edge. And yet people shrug their shoulders at these jerks who steal it from us because they think that their right to make noise outweighs people's right to quiet.

Sometimes I have a role in hiring editors and copywriters. And it's amazing how much slop we receive from applicants, even from people who otherwise seem qualified or who have been in the field for many years. Where is the pride, the dignity in their own capacity and skill? Where is the respect for people having to trawl through the applications who read through the same boring, regurgitated sample piece with the same banal phrasing time and again? The fact is that we'd consider someone doing their own work and who wanted to challenge themselves well over someone who was just pressing a button for output any day. We are not looking for the smooth-brained "perfection" of outsourced writing/editing. We're looking for people who can think for themselves, make decisions about language, have their own voice, can interact with a text on a meaningful level, and who can think critically about grammar and mechanics.

I am pretty excited about The Forsyte Saga being on Netflix. I watched the series first, and then I read the book a couple of times in the last few years. Now I can watch the series again. I can never get over how psychological it is. And in English-speaking entertainment world, it could only be adapted for screen with British actors with stage experience to be able to convey the subtleties and subtexts to the viewer successfully.

Attended an online conference. What I realized about myself from the start was the ability to understand immediately whose energies jibed with mine and whose energies didn't. The past years of coaching education and experience have honed that intuition even in remote environments. Before, it was just a dim sense with no language to describe it and a faintly ill feeling that I had betrayed myself when giving my attention to situations that brought unease. Intuition and feeling other's energy is an underrated skill that, if honed by more people, would perhaps allow us to shift our focus from what is shiny and entertaining to what has substance.

Also what's making me happy today: A friend sent me a little package of gifts that were totally reflective of her aesthetic -- a bright yellow notebook, a cheerful card, and a hand-dyed silk scarf she picked up on her travels. They're more precious for reminding me of her as her. And I'll use that yellow notebook even though I'd never choose yellow for myself!

I think a lot about the culture-specific expectation for someone to finish talking before the other person jumps in. This, to me, feels like such a hierarchical "rule" that favors people in power.

Certain cultures (and people with neurodivergent traits) jump in when someone else is talking out of excitement, support, agreement, or enthusiasm.

In certain circles in the West, this is seen as rude.

As a woman, I've learned to jump in because otherwise, I will be waiting forever for the other person to stop talking -- the West also encourages people achieving a pedestal and never relinquishing it to other voices.

I just saw a piece that identified cross-talk (which might also include call and response) to be an indicator of low emotional intelligence. I can't buy into that propaganda. It's very white male coded -- it benefits people in power.

A couple of days ago I was having a conversation with another quick thinker. Our words were tumbling over the other's, and we were both aware of it and conditioned to be apologetic, so we where, but actually, the discussion was flowing at a pace that was right for us and with the right level of nuance and divergence. It was lively and enjoyable, and my impression was that neither felt the other was rude, but that we were both afraid of being rude to the other person.

Contrast this with people in my life who are good people but who nevertheless feel they occupy an elite position and get very agitated if you speak "out of turn," which might be half an hour later if you actually wait for them to pause in order to respond. Really, who's lacking emotional intelligence, huh?

I had another experience with identifying the problem wrongly this week. Someone I respect thinks that I have a difficult time with change. But this is so curious to me -- I do not see myself as someone afraid of change. I'm someone who doesn't shy away from reinventing themselves, who has moved to a different country, and who has studied in various disciplines. And so, to me, the problem isn't change. It's that I work hard to move within the world in a way that is right for me, and that way is often a minority way. I get overstimulated easily, but it's not about change at all -- it's just about avoiding those situations when possible or being able to fully manage when not (which current lifestyle does not always allow for). For me, it's the cognitive load that occurs when things do not go according to plan (not the change itself). I spend a LOT of energy in advance to make sure that I will not be overloaded on the spot, but when the plan fails, then I have to make quick decisions, all of which are typically subpar. So again, it's not about change. It's about both cognitive load and the potential of being put in a worse situation that will create overstimulation and even more cognitive load. I wonder if anyone can relate?
