It is an incredible privilege to do what I do. I am aware that not everyone has the resources or opportunities to go out and find birds and take photos of them. I take this seriously and do what I can to be a good steward of the abilities I’ve been given; and to share them as a reminder that the earth is a beautiful place that’s worth fighting for.

Northern flickers are known for spending more time on the ground than the typical woodpecker species, but once they know I’m on the ground, they usually fly up to someplace. Gotta be real sneaky on the approach.

A lot of the photos I like most aren’t the most technically difficult, or of the most unusual birds, but they remind me of special experiences. Like the first time a Loggerhead shrike got close to me on Santa Cruz Island (Li’muw). I’d been going for a few years but they would usually keep their distance. My most recent trip to the island was last March and I don’t have any others planned so it’s nice to have these memories.

I try to take at least one photo every day, just to keep my skills sharp. But for ones I’m really proud of, it’s probably only maybe three or four every year. Even though I have an idea of what I’m looking for vs when I first started a decade ago, a lot of things have to come together for the right outcome. But that’s what keeps it interesting. Like with any creative endeavor, I think you learn to embrace the work as part of the process.

It’s interesting to compare the feeding styles of the moth and the hummingbird. Both are able to hover and change directions quickly, but the hummingbird is more stable, maybe because it’s slightly larger and I would assume the muscle structure of a bird vs a moth. But the hummingbird needs to aim its beak so the tongue can reach the nectar while the moth has its flexible proboscis to access it. Both of these photos were taken on the same morning.

When the berries are in the tree, the sound of the waxwings can reach SPLs rivaling the parrots (although at a higher frequency). They’re usually up there too high though, so I rarely bother to try for a photo. But with the sun already so hot at 7:30, the shade was clearly the best place to be. Every once in awhile a waxwing would drop down to snatch a berry and after dozens of frustrating attempts, I finally got one!
