@edza We have a contractor we’ve used several times for small to medium sized jobs on our house (he also does major renos). On our jobs, “It’ll be 7 or 8 days” was 7.5 days. “Expect it to take 6 weeks” was 6 full weeks + 2 mornings in the 7th week.

I’ve noticed that he plans it all out ahead of time (including using CAD s/w), has subcontractors who know he’ll drop them if they’re unreliable, builds in a reasonable amount of buffer and doesn’t allow feature creep. He’s like a god to me.

@Daojoan As someone who used to have several streamers subscribed to at all times, I’m here to say that you can enjoy life just fine if you only have one going at a time and each one only for 1 month before cancelling it. We save hundreds of dollars per year with this approach and still get to watch everything we want to, just usually a little later than we used to. And we get to feel like we’re telling the streamers where to shove their price increases, as a bonus.

@slava When I was writing C++ code in the 1990s, I think I would have predicted that, by 2026, there’d be readily available code inspection tools that would have eliminated that possibility from ever happening again. Instead we have “AI” that produces garbage at an astronomical environmental and societal cost. That’s just great.

@preya Since AI produces slop, I propose we start referring to them as “slop machines.” It works because it makes them sound like “slot machines” and they have roughly the same probability of paying off.

@Sheril In Canada, a birthday of May 24th would mean you’d have an entire long weekend held in your honour: the “May two-four weekend,” which supposedly is some sort of reference to a box containing two dozen bottles of beer.
