Apparently bipolar personality disorder awareness day is coming up, so my company mentioned it in one of its countless internal newsletters.
They actually included a first-hand account of what it’s like, with practical examples.
I’ve talked about leaving my disability Employee Resource Group before and I still think it’s unfair to expect disabled employees to constantly do The Work of educating others, but I have done it to - what felt like - good effect and appreciate when others are generous with their spoons in the same way.
They mentioned different kinds of personal triggers for mania or depression, and the importance of structure, diet, exercise and therapy. It was especially relevant to the general public, because we don’t always understand how what’s totally cool for one person can send another person spiraling. I feel that as well, as an autistic person.
Besides talking about the struggles that come with BPD, they mentioned the correlations with deep empathy and creative thinking. Of course one can file this under “corporate speak to make disabled people valuable to shareholders,” but it’s also personally relevant, and I’ve also noticed it myself.
So yeah, if you don’t have BPD, maybe take the time to learn about it. If you do, I hope this saved you some spoons.
