Anarchists and Libertarian used to be synonymous, since Libertarian was a way to talk about Anarchism without being persecuted. Later in the US Proprietarians coopted the term Libertarian, and later even Anarchism by claiming to be ‘Anarcho-Capitalists’.

A person who believes that an authoritarian state is righteous and justified as long as it calls itself communist (even if it’s not), examples being the USSR, North Korea, China, and oddly the current capitalist Russian federation. You can find a more in-depth answer here.

The kernel update issue on Android is going to be exactly the same for PostmarketOS and for the exact same reason: proprietary firmwares and/or drivers.

That is not the case, as PostmarketOS uses community made open-source drivers, even for the GPU, and all devices that it supports uses the mainline kernel, as all of the drivers they develop are upstreamed to mainline, instead of it being a proprietary driver that is locked to a specific kernel.

The open-source drivers aren’t currently as polished as the proprietary ones, but as we’ve seen the open-source AMD driver for desktop, it can become the best option with community effort and funding.

and now you need to maintain both a GNU/systemd/Linux AND a compatibility layer with Android

The point of adopting Postmarket is that they could then rely on the open-source community to help with maintaining most of of the components, much like how Linux desktop or Linux Server works currently. Waydroid is developed by its own team, so they wouldn’t need to fork that and maintain it to have access to Android apps (though they could help contribute to it if they wanted to).

From a security and privacy standpoint, Linux was never designed to handle hostile apps designed to aquire as much data as possible. Android has a sandboxing system

Android is Linux at the core, yet it was able to be hardened, which shows that PostmarketOS could be similarly hardened if such features were adequately funded and developed by the EU. Linux already has Wayland, which is a huge step forward for security, and Flatpak packages already have Android-like permissions built in (though they would need to modify how those work by default to increase security).

I'm not entirely sure if that would be better than just adopting PostmarketOS, since forking AOSP would mean maintaining a fork of that entire ecosystem, and I'm unsure how they would deal with all the phone manufacturers dropping support for phones rather quickly, or using outdated kernels to access GPU and hardware drivers for said phones after the manufacturer drops support. Investing in PostmarketOS instead would bring with it much less stuff to fork, along with access to the mainline linux kernel (instead of outdated Android ones) that use open-source GPU drivers that can be effectively maintained, and it can support Android compatibility with a compatibility layer, Waydroid. A polished PostmarketOS ecosystem only seems to offer advantages compared to a forked AOSP, so if they're choosing which to invest in, Postmarket seems like the clear winner.

You have been advised with solid info. Stick with Mint, openSUSE isn’t nearly as user friendly to newbies in comparison (not sure why that other user is suggesting it instead).

Graphene is good, though it’s still pretty reliant upon Google not making life even harder for them, which it has been doing consistently.

A safer long-term option that is detached from Google’s whims entirely is PostmarketOS, which isn’t based on Android at all, but is instead a project based on Linux directly.

Yeah, if they'd gone with a decentralized model, it'd be able to scale up without the extreme operating costs (Lemmy/piefed is a good example of that in practice). Currently our best decentralized/federated instant messengers are XMPP and Deltachat, which cost peanuts to host.

20 years ago Linux couldn’t play 95% of Windows games seamlessly without tinkering, couldn’t easily produce music without a lot of tinkering and few DAWs, and had spotty WiFi card support. All of those are now no longer a problem, and make transitioning to it far easier for a much wider swath of people.

This video does a great job explaining the practical usefulness of the ‘Collective dreaming’ that Solarpunk provides. In short, it gives us a collective goal to aim toward, which then prompts us to figure out what the best way of achieving that goal is with the tools at hand.

In that way, I would put forward that Solarpunk provides a useful framework to address the issues we face today. At its core it encourages decentralized grassroots community building to address problems (the ‘punk’ part), which is generally more effective than spinning our collective wheels trying to reform political machinery that is fully corporate captured, and I would consider a form of prefiguration.

And the ‘Solar’ part encourages adopting practical and ecological technology to address the issue of our planet becoming uninhabitable from our current political and economic models; adopting renewable energy (which often scales down really well, helping out the decentralized part), viewing a healthy ecology as essential infrastructure to a prosperous existence, stopping consumerism with Degrowth, etc.

In practice, Solarpunk basically lets us collectively see a plausible outcome if we embraced Eco-Anarchism (basically combining what Catalonia was able to achieve in the 30’s, along with a distinct focus on restoring our planet’s ecosystems).

That it isn’t some impractical sci-fi concept needing yet to be invented tech, but instead an achievable goal even with our existing technology, is a very encouraging and motivating concept, IMO.

I wrote my personal reasons for preferring resistive over gas, despite the need to learn how to use it, which I prefer due to my own perceived negatives of gas. I actually live in a house with a gas stove right now, and I’m seriously considering having the kitchen wired for 240v someday just so I can install a resistive stove, since most of the time I use a portable induction cooktop in preference to using the gas stove. Calling that disingenuous and cope is… Certainly an interesting viewpoint. It would be similar to suggesting that anyone who prefers or speaks of the merits of bicycles over tricycles is disingenuous and coping due to needing to learn how to ride a bicycle, where as tricycles have no learning period (despite coming with their own advantages and disadvantages).

For most of my life I’d cooked on a resistive coil-top stove, and only in the last few years was I able to use a gas, and even more recently, induction stovetop. Induction is far and away my favorite, but between gas and resistive, I don’t really find gas preferable to resistive. The only real advantage it has is quick heat control with non-cast iron cookware, but that can be overcome pretty easily on resistive stoves by lifting the pan or moving it to an inactive burner until the active one cools down to the desired temp. I virtually always use cast iron cookware, which makes gas’s ability to make quick temp changes less of a noticeable advantage. More noticeable to me was the disadvantage of the handles on my cookware getting super hot very quickly with gas due to how much heat escapes around the sides, and the inability to place flammable things over a pot or pan to prevent splatter (like a paper plate). I also really disliked the idea of potentially forgetting a burner being left on, but with the flame out. That only happened to me once, but it was quite scary to walk into a living room smelling strongly of gas. And in a kitchen without outside ventilation above the stove, the pollutants from burning gas were noticeable, especially if the oven was on. On my personal scale, I’d rate gas stoves at the bottom despite their slightly advantageous heat responsiveness, with resistive in the middle, and induction the best of both worlds.

Nationwide No Kings Protest is Today! Find A Protest Near You in The Post Body! #50501

cross-posted from: slrpnk.net/post/35863544

You can use the protest map on no kings.org to find a local protest happening near you: www.nokings.org (or use this site with your zip code if the map isn’t working for you).

You don’t need a reservation, you don’t need to sign up, just find the address and head over. Be sure to bring some water and snacks, and try to talk with the people around you to make connections, exchange contact info (I recommend Delta Chat, which let’s you instantly share or join an encrypted chat with a just a link or QR code).

There aren’t many chances in the year to make connections with others with such a huge group of like-minded people, so make the most of it! Don’t just match and chant, reach out to others and if they have a good vibe, talk to them about staying in touch and organizing together, perhaps by helping a local mutual aid group!

For more info on the aspect of organizing and other tangible steps we can take to effectively resist, check out this post.

Not OP, but XMPP and Delta chat are good options. For XMPP, the Movim client in particular is a good replacement for Discord, since it can do audio/video calls, as well as screenshare, and Discord-like spaces (channels with groups of rooms).

I’m this close to saying “fuck it” and wasting the next couple of years of my life on a new protocol that no one is gonna use. This article does a good job exploring the landscape of text chats, and ultimately finds that XMPP is still our best bet, it just needs some spit and polish.

I want to point out that the author of that linked blog, Soatok, actually removed a response in the comments from an OMEMO developer which clarified some things (you can it read here), which personally I think was rather odd/bad faith of them to do. When asked about it, this was their response: “I’ll make an edit later about the protocol version thing, but I’m not interested in having questions answered. My entire horse in this race is for evangelists to f** off and leave me alone. That’s it. That’s all I want.” According to the OMEMO developer in his response, there’s nothing really wrong with OMEMO 0.3.0, as the dev considers it a stable standard that clients can safely implement, with newer versions basically being public beta releases toward a stable ‘OMEMO 2’ standard that can eventually replace 0.3.0. Also @smiletolerantly@awful.systems.

I still think that it is important to standarize a canonical Linux core If you’re not aware, Ubuntu Touch is no longer operated or developed by Canonical, they abandoned the project in 2017. UT was then picked up by UBPorts, a community effort to keep alive what Canonical left behind. Personally, I don’t have a very high opinion of Canonical due to their use of CLAs, which also appear to be present in some fashion with UT and UBPorts as well: I agree that some standardization would likely be beneficial in some areas (such as focusing on a single Phone UI and polishing it up). PostmarketOS is making the most progress on getting real Linux on mobile, so if I had to pick one project to support monetarily, and one that could become mainstream, or partner with a manufacturer like GrapheneOS, I think that would be the project to back, IMHO.

It is certainly not usable for the average person in it's current state, hence why I suggest donating to it to help with developing it. With proper funding and full-time devs, it would be able to focus on adding proper support to more phones, or potentially partner with a manufacturer like GrapheneOS just did with Motorola to get first-class support on a smaller handful of devices. Postmarket is our only long-term mobile option that will remain FLOSS and in the users best interest, we just have to support it and help build it up into something we can all use :)

The issue with Ubuntu Touch is that unfortunately it’s not a genuine alternative to Android, as it actually relies on Android quite a lot to function as well as it does. It often uses an outdated Android kernel (which is also usually not receiving security updates) and a Halium abstraction layer to access the closed source binary blob Android drivers for the phone’s hardware. It also requires that it be installed on top of an existing Android install, so in all it’s more of a Linux abstraction layer on top of Android, which means it’s not truly escaping the control of the Android ecosystem. PostmarketOS and Mobian are genuinely Mobile focused Linux distros that run on the mainline up-to-date Linux kernel the bare metal, meaning they are not subject to any influence from Google. Both projects often collaborate and benefit from each other, they just use a different base distro (Alpine for PostmarketOS, Debian for Mobian), but that doesn’t result in any wasted effort, as ultimately any new developments, drivers, or new phone support are mainlined into the kernel itself, so both projects benefit. They’re not as usable as Ubuntu Touch is right now, but they are ultimately the better solutions long-term to ensure that all the code is under community control so we aren’t reliant on outdated unsecure Android components.

For anyone reading thus, please consider donating to PostmarketOS or Mobian if you have the means, as it will help us escape the Android ecosystem which is getting more and more anti-user due to google controlling it.
