Certainly my guess. No way he was actually dumb enough to pay over £600,000 just for an image someone could "steal" 1:1 just by copying and pasting. It was almost certainly a way to move money somewhere while retaining plausible deniability, just like with all the other scams projects he's been part of over the years

Exactly. We're not blind or don't care about politics. I'm more than aware of my country's problems and the US's... But how am I meant to not burn out on this stuff if I can't get away from it? Sure I could just detox from social media and go work on something that interests me, and that's what I do most of the time... But sometimes I do still want to chat with others, and it'd be nice to be able to do that and have it not be about politics.

Exactly. The far right of most countries barely even need to try anymore, the US has gotten so good at flooding the news that they even burn out people from other countries from the constant cynicism

Daft_ish has got a real problem if they're that outraged by the mod's response. I've seen plenty of powertriping arseholes to be mad at in my time, but this isn't it. US politics, including about the ICE murders, is spoken about more than enough across the English speaking internet. I know as much about current US politics as I do my own country's politics, because you can't get away from it without blocking most posts on here. Which is to say that some of us would just like to have a space to NOT talk or think about politics, including US politics.

As @boonhet@sopuli.xyz said, it isn't really the same scenario. There were EVs as early as the 19th century (wikipedia I know, but I'm not doing a deep dive for a forum comment) and they were used for various applications. So while there definitely was, and still is very much an anti-green economy conspiracy going on... that wasn't the only factor supressing EVs from mass production and usage back then. Battery chemistry was inefficient - so a battery big enough to compete with IC engines even back then would've needed to be HUGE, making it both too unwieldy and expensive to justify putting into a car. Any battery you could actually fit into a reasonably sized car was still prohibitively expensive, and had nowhere near the mileage to compete with the day's IC engines. So they just weren't viable for the masses. And as Boon said, if nobody can make a profit making EVs for consuners, they simply won't make them for consumers. It's only with cheaper and more efficient battery chemistry, and a booming green economy thanks to consumer pressure, that they're now starting to be able to make EVs that can compete with IC engines on both price and mileage - which is what consumers really care about.

The problem with your regular conspiracy theorist is that the conspiracies they usually believe in are born of ignorance, and can be utterly dismantled with relatively little research. Why would a corrupt, tax-dodging billionaire who literally embezzeled from a children's charity be willing to help anyone but himself? How could there be a pedo-ring hosted in the basement of a random pizza restaurant with no basement? From my experience at least, the conspiracies that turn out to be true are usually those where there is a concrete benefit to those involved, especially when it involves depravity. Who stands to benefit from suppression of the Earth being flat, and how do they benefit? Even to more "credible" conspiracies. If vaccines did cause Autism, and it was provable - why wouldn't one of the big pharmaceuticals have ripped their competition to shreds by showing that and releasing their own that doesn't? Do pharmaceutical giants not like kicking their competition out the market and securing more profit for themselves?

Yeah, this was my take. Those without empathy view it as a weakness, because nobody becomes a billionaire by helping others in need

Honestly, I think consumers allowing manufacturers to start integrating screens into cars was a mistake. Knobs and dials are way easier to nevigate blind (whilst focusing on the road like we're meant to), and none of that stops you plugging in your own third party device for other features, or replacing the headboard yourself. Giant tablets with complex menus are dangerous to drivers, and only serve to milk the consumer for things they already had access to in their car as standard not 10 years ago.

Edit: Changed basically the whole comment, as you're right. I looked at the Blog, and it does state in his FAQ that he had a backup. Which frankly makes a significant part of the article completely BS - as it makes multiple heavy implications that he didn't have any backup. This apparently happened with “no explanation and no recourse,” putting “terabytes of family photos” and their entire message history out of reach, as well as preventing the ability to sync work across devices. He has copies elsewhere, so why would he be worried about losing access to this data. Also, the end of the article discusses not storing all your data in one place... If you store your photos and files in a single place, it’s a good idea to back them up to multiple locations to protect against something going wrong. But with how integrated devices are these days, it’s hard to avoid having all your apps, purchases and media within a single ecosystem. In cases like that, there’s not a lot you can do. So it wouldn't be wrong of most people to walk away from this article with the assumption that he didn't have a proper backup strategy.

Everyone always learns the hard way, just the same as I did - having only one backup is usually as good as no backup at all. For data you can't afford to lose, the 3-2-1 rule is king. Original, cold local, and remote.

All I can do is pray that my current RAM survives long enough for this stupid AI bubble to burst, like with the Crypto-Bro GPUs. But it is kind of horrifying how easily consumers have been priced out of the RAM market - at least for newer stuff anyways
