With the recent #opensource licensing discussion I figured I would repost my talk from Fosdem a few years ago talking about how big money and greed is impacting #opensource. I talked about the BSL and SSPL in the talk. Time to refresh it and submit it for the upcoming conference season!

Consider these quotes:
“We don’t really track metrics, our focus is on building the open source culture internally and building a great community.” - Leader for a large #OSPO
“Metrics are overrated, we do pay attention to a few but it's more about establishing a healthy and engaging community” - Leader for a large #oss project
In the 2nd part of my series on measuring different parts of the #opensource community, I try to come to terms with these types of statements.

Getting product usage telemetry from #opensource projects is often tricky. In the past, I have had success using a very lightweight call-home functionality that merely checks if what is being used is up to date. I wrote up a straightforward example that checks a GitHub repository to see if someone is using the latest version. This allows me to see unique servers/endpoints and even basic version info. Check out my blog to see how I did it:

Don't you hate when you are recording a presentation and rolling, getting into it... and 20 minutes in you look down and realize... oooooooops forgot to hit record.
Super exicted to release this weekend Hacking #opensource Business Podcast and deep dive into #DevRel and #community with @JoeKarlsson@hachyderm.io
We just released an analysis of q1 #opensource usage based on downloads and documentation views. Some interesting results:
* overall open source downloads grew by 60%
* enterprises specifically downloaded 18% more OSS
* Oddly, Oracle was the number 1 enterprise in terms of download volume
* Apple engineers spent more time in docs then anyone else in the enterprise space
* Downloads from Russia more than tripled last quarter.

Tomorrow we will drop the next Hacking #OpenSource Business Podcast episode featuring this week's guest @JoeKarlsson@hachyderm.io , from Tinybird. Joe stopped by to talk all about #devrel and #community! Here is a clip from the episode to tide you over:
Are you interested in getting more users to start using your #opensource project? I talked about this recently and decided to write down my thoughts. There are 3 pillars you need before you can start:
1. Build a great ( kick-ass) product
2. Get people to take notice of it
3. You need to focus on making it easy
Seem simple, right? Has the HOSS turned into captain obvious? It is much easier said than done. Get my thoughts in my latest blog:

So I was looking at data from the last quarter from #opensource downloads (for about 2.2K different OSS packages)... weird to see that across 240M downloads, the enterprise company downloading the most #opensource is ... well, before I say... any guesses?
This week on the Hacking #OpenSource Business Podcast Avi Press and I had the absolute privilege to sit down and chat with Nithya Ruff! If you don't know Nithya, she is the Head of the Open Source Program Office Amazon, & the Chair of The Linux Foundation Board of Directors. She has been a frequent speaker, author, and contributor to the open source community.
Well, that is disheartening, but not surprising: 7000 new #opensource malware packages...
