@WaitingForTheSign@mstdn.ca I am involved… “Canada needs them [drones] to be as fast as fighter jets” Why? “or they are useless for any type of aerial defence” Defence against what? @jfmezei@mstdn.ca
I like to get in over my head and post nonsense. Retired, spend my time looking for something to do so became a hypnotist. Previously an artist, writer, goldsmith, and pump tech. Have COPD and addicted to cannabis. Picked 73 a long time ago, as a good time to kick the bucket, now it's coming up faster than I like. Oh and I like animals, pets, they make better people than people. Introvert. I used to be smart.

Defence against a hostile aggressor. The discussion originated on the suitability of fighter jets to purchase for Canada's aerial defence, then turned to drones. I don't claim to have any special aviation knowledge nor do I think the others do.
Why should drones fly like fighter jets, is the same reason you don't have a weapons platform like the the AC10 Thunderbolt flying as interceptors in a dogfight, too slow. Drones can't yet intercept a jet fighter at mach speeds to prevent an attack, or escape being shot down.
Speed in aerial combat has always been the advantage to gain air superiority and domination over a battlefield. Allowing slower moving aircraft like aerial weapons platforms to assist ground operations and rescue aircraft. It's been that way since aircraft were first used in WW1 as combat vehicles.
If you are going to use drones as a sole means of aerial defence then they need to be as fast as fighter jets and they can be faster than.
