Arcane Roops

@arcaneoverflow@techhub.social
mastodon 4.5.8

Semi-retired programmer. I mean I took a 'blue collar' job to save my sanity, but I can't seem to stop writing code :-)

User of Linux (various) and author of the Wooden Spoon web server, which absolutely nobody uses, not even me :-)

Big fan of open source software, the right to repair, and the #disenshittification of everything.

@robinhouston Some good points there :-) I ended up adding https to my home-brew http: server, even though I'm pretty much the only human who uses it, because my own browsers kept nagging me. I can't imagine I'll ever use what I learned again (using SSL in C89!) so it's almost time down the drain.

@burnitdown @ClickyMcTicker @IcyPalm @notjustbikes And the prize for spineless arse who sends a list of "fuck you" in a PM but hasn't the guts to continue a debate in public, one that they decided to join in, goes to... Finally I have a use for the Mastodon twitlist. I always wondered what it was for.

@burnitdown @ClickyMcTicker @IcyPalm @notjustbikes

  1. Don’t pretend you can tell me what to do or say.

  2. YOU were the one who started talking about risks, so you can’t expect people to take you seriously, if you complain when I use established facts to put those risks in context.

I note that coal kills 25 to 30 people per Terawatt-hour of energy, worldwide. Guess how many people die per Terawatt-hour of nuclear energy? I’ll give you a clue: it’s less than one.

By any sane measure, nuclear is way, way less risky than coal (or natural gas). Not perfect, but hugely better.

@burnitdown @ClickyMcTicker @IcyPalm @notjustbikes What point is there in looking at single events, when we have a huge amount of data over many decades? I might as well point at the Tenerife air disaster that killed well over 500 people, and claim it makes cars safer than planes (hint: it doesn't!)

@burnitdown @ClickyMcTicker @IcyPalm @notjustbikes "very dangerous"? There are risks, of course, as with everything. But pick any date of any year (include Chernobyl and/or the Windscale reactor fire if you like) and coal has killed more people than nuclear energy, by a big margin. My neighbour's coal fire chimney is more radioactive than anywhere I could access near Windscale!

@tlayoyo It's odd, because quite a few people were seeing something like ∅ as zero for computer work back in the 1980s, but in truth there was a dotted zero available on most of the systems I saw. I've now chosen fonts that dot the zero, but I still cross them when I'm writing by hand.

@faux_icing @kevlin Talking of billboards, there was a *cheeky* advert on the roadside in Amstelveen for ladies' underwear years ago titled "BIL BOARD" (a Dutch pun on a word for "bum" :-) )
