In the 2001 film Vanilla Sky, Tom Cruise drives a dark blue car meant to look like a Ferrari 250 GTO, but it is actually a highly crafted kit car replica based on a 1976 Datsun 260Z/ 280Z. It’s powered by a small block 350 cubic inch Chevrolet V8. Known as an Alpha One GTO, this replica was used to avoid risking a real $50 million+ Ferrari during the famous, real-life filmed, empty Times Square scene.

A powerful image from Iran after the Islamic Revolution, showing Ayatollah Ali Khamenei meeting Yasser Arafat (leader of Palestinian Liberation Organization) during Arafat’s visit to Tehran, 1979....

It represents a moment of alliance in the early years of the Islamic Republic. A moment that symbolized a new political chapter and solidarity during a transformative time in the Middle East.

Artist's impressions of Martin Model 245....

In the late 1940s, the U.S. Navy sought a long-range carrier-based jet bomber. The Glenn L. Martin Company proposed an unusual seaplane-bomber hybrid (Model 245) that could refuel from submarines and later operate from a carrier after discarding its boat hull. The concept was considered too unconventional, and the Navy instead selected the more traditional Douglas A3D Skywarrior.

The Egyptian House in Penzance, Cornwall, was built between 1834 and 1837 to house the mineral collection of dealer John Lavin.

The choice of the Egyptian style for a mineral shop may seem odd, but the building was inspired by the now-lost Egyptian Hall in Piccadilly, London, which opened in 1812 to display the private museum of collector William Bullock.

Today, the building is occupied by shops and apartments.

In 1959, the Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin developed the modern three-point seat belt. Although the design was patented, the company decided the patent was to be left open, making it available to all vehicle manufacturers to use for free. Within five years of its introduction, three-point belts became standard in cars throughout Europe and the U.S.

Queen Victoria once described her eighth child, Prince Leopold, as “the ugliest and least pleasing of the whole family.” She often exaggerated his features in her sketches and was openly critical of his appearance. Ironically, he was said to resemble her more than any of her other children.

The Ledovik is a winter spirit from Slavic-style folklore. His name comes from the word for ice. He lives in frozen forests, icy fields, and deep snowdrifts.

People say the Ledovik moves with cold wind and frost. When he passes, water freezes, paths become slippery, and the air feels sharp and heavy. He is rarely seen, but his presence is felt in sudden deep cold.

Fragment of a clay goddess figurine from the archaeological site of Tall-e Bakun (Tall-i Bakun), Kenareh, near Persepolis, Iran.

We see traditional for the goddess symbols like the tree of life, swastikas, as well as her breasts providing nourishment.

Radiocarbon dates for Tall-e Bakun B spanned 5360-4700 BC and levels of Tall-i Bakun A corresponding to the Middle/Late Bakun transition period date to 4500-4250 BC.

Two children on Scotland Road, Liverpool, taken in the 1890s. The depopulation of the countryside to the towns and cities created an explosion of over population in the slums and many lived in poverty.

The period of most dramatic change can be seen in the nineteenth century, a period which shaped the landscape we all live in, the nature of the work we do and the ways in which we relate to the natural world.

Princess Alexandra of Bavaria suffered from a bizarre and heartbreaking psychological condition known as “glass delusion.” She believed that when she was younger, she’d swallowed a glass piano. She was so afraid to break this imaginary glass piano that she’d turn sideways to fit through doorways and move slowly through palace’s hallways. Shockingly, she wasn’t only royal to be afflicted by this rare form of melancholy. King Charles VI of France believed he was made of glass.

Argentine soldier poses in a Tommy helmet taken from the Falkland Islands Defence Force (FIDF) armoury during the invasion...

The helmet had long been retired from the British Armed Forces, but the notoriously poorly equipped FIDF appears to have still had the helmet in their armoury. As it turned out in order to distinguish friend from foe, the British forces decided to wear their berets, rather than helmets.

Terracotta goddess figurine (2300-2100 BC) found at Tureng Tepe, Iran 🇮🇷

She has an elaborate headdress and jewelry made from small pieces of clay. Holes in top of her head suggest that feathers or plants were inserted. She is depicted with large breasts and an emphasised pubic triangle, resembling fertile soil from which a plant extends up her belly, similar to previous figurines we have shared here. The first modern excavations of the site were led by Frederick Wulsin in 1931.

Many German soldiers were stunned to encounter Soviet women in combat, something that ran counter to their own ideological doctrines, which insisted that women belonged in home and were meant for motherhood.

To them, presence of women on front lines was twisted into “evidence” that Soviet system was degenerate and inferior. Himmler even issued orders that captured women were not to be taken to POW camps but executed on the spot.

A carved wooden figure from Iatmul culture of Sepik River region in Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬

The figure depicts a small man with a disproportionately large, erect phallus. It is a traditional form of Iatmul art, often created as a "playful pornography" to express masculinity or intimidate tourists.

The art style often displays pronounced symmetry and patterning, reflecting dualism prominent in Iatmul thought.

Such figures were sold to tourists during mid-to-late 20th Century.

The Horten Ho 229 was a radical 1940s flying-wing aircraft that seemed decades ahead of its time, with an early form of stealth-like design. Developed by the Horten brothers for Nazi Germany, the jet-powered prototype reached speeds around 607 mph and later influenced designs such as the B-2 Spirit.

At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, British sprinter Linford Christie sparked controversy by wearing contact lenses featuring a tiny Puma logo during competition. The move was seen as ambush marketing, exploiting global television coverage to promote a sponsor without official Olympic approval.

In 2013, Seattle resident Richard Swanson began an ambitious 10,000-mile mission called Breakaway Brazil, planning to dribble a soccer ball through 11 countries to reach the 2014 World Cup in São Paulo. The journey aimed to raise awareness and funds for the One World Futbol Project, which provides nearly indestructible soccer balls to children in developing nations.

This iconic photograph captures the massive ash cloud from the catastrophic 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens..... The photo was taken on May 18, 1980, by Richard Lasher, a Boeing employee who was on his way to ride his dirt bike near Spirit Lake. As the ash cloud rapidly approached, Lasher was forced to abandon his red Ford Pinto and escape on his motorcycle. The eruption was a lateral blast, considered the most disastrous volcanic eruption in U.S. history. #archaeohistories

In 1959, a cement mixer with a full load of cement, wrecked near Winganon, Oklahoma 🇺🇸 By the time a tow truck came to haul it away, all of cement had hardened inside of mixer. Tow truck was not able to remove all wreckage at same time because of weight, and decided to haul only cab/frame and would come back for detached mixer later, which never happened. Today, 67 years later, it still sits where it fell. Locals have painted it and added "rocket thrusters" to make it look like a space capsule.

A replica of military bicycle from early 20th Century, equipped with spring-loaded wheels, a fascinating example of innovation in military equipment design of the time. This model, dating back to the 1900s, featured a spring suspension system in the wheels, designed to enhance mobility across rough and uneven terrain. The spring-loaded wheels helped absorb shocks, making the bicycle more effective for soldiers navigating challenging environments. #archaeohistories
