I suppose if you are being pressured to use AI at work, one thing you could do is send HR articles/studies on AI psychosis & ask "does [company name] accept liability for any mental harm that may occur from AI use?"

Before you touch any of the AI tools they want you to use, ask them to put in writing that the company is aware of the concerns about mental harm from AI use but is asking you to use it anyway. Ask to put a note in your employee file saying that you objected to using it.

I picked up The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming! on DVD yesterday, & I'm looking forward to revisiting it.

It's quite a silly movie, but I think watching it as a kid was pretty formative.

Basically the thrust of the movie is that:
- acting in fear & out of an "us vs them" mentality puts everyone in danger
- on the other side of big national conflicts are other human beings, just as curious about the world & scared of getting hurt as we are.

See, the thing about having one of the most powerful & overfunded militaries in the world is that as long as you're being judicious about when & where you use it, you can get most other nations to leave you alone because the risk of tussling with you is too great.

The calculus starts to change when you start a) acting with reckless abandon & threatening everyone with brutal warfare and b) USING your resources which—while considerable—are not infinite.

Target execs do understand that by sticking to their guns on removing Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion initiatives for over a year at this point, that they have officially, obviously, & publicly taken a stance as being specifically THE anti-diversity retailer, right?

A significant number of people are still boycotting a year later, & in my opinion there is no way to walk the ill-will back without dealing with the diversity problem.

The oligarchs will keep pushing their agenda, & the political system will keep playing along, regardless of party.

In the coming years of crisis as the effects of imperialist capitalism start to become more & more dire, the oligarchs need to tighten their control over us.

Dems are abandoning trans rights not because it's a losing issue but because trans people are vulnerable to erasure & dehumanization. The idea is to strip away rights & create a culture ruled by fear & violence.

So, in my circles, the phrase "purity culture" refers to the harmful & abusive attitudes & behavior around sex & sexuality in religious communities (especially within evangelicalism).

I'm seeing discussion of Cory Doctorow's use of the term "purity culture" to mean something like people who are (supposedly) so obsessed with being perfectly ethical that they harass others and...I dunno...halt progress. I guess he's not the only one who uses it that way, but it's news to me.

You know, with how much social progress we have made IN SPITE of the best efforts of the ruling classes, I think the evidence supports the idea that humans may actually be surprisingly cooperative & empathetic.

We have been pushing against massive, well-funded social engineering intended to halt progress in its tracks & push us backwards, yet we have gained so much ground culturally/socially over the last several decades, despite those screaming at us to put everything back the way it was.

People will use your outrage against the harm that you or someone else has experienced as a reason to ignore you.

Sometimes you need to take a deep breath (literally or metaphorically) to be able to articulate what you need to say. Rage can sometimes overwhelm us in ways that make it hard to communicate.

But if someone ignores your demands for justice simply on the basis that you sound too angry to them, do not imagine there is any way you can express yourself that they will see as legitimate.

I think we're going to see a massive cult implosion after Trump dies. Not sure whether it will be immediate or gradual collapse, not sure what cult members will do when their world implodes, but there is no charismatic leader ready to take the reins of this thing. I don't know what it means for the world that the MAGA cult is going to collapse, but it will. It may give way to the rise of another cult, no less dangerous. All I'm saying is this thing is already rickety. It's going to fall.

The thing my brother told me about Minneapolis right now that haunts me most is just the idea of going out in your neighborhood and seeing a note left on a car with smashed windows: "2 people were taken here." I can't stop thinking about that. About the idea of watching 2 people snatched off the streets by violent thugs, & you don't even know who they are, just that they are gone now & you have no idea what will happen to them next. But you record the scrap of information that you do have.

Frequently the best thing for you to be doing to help is going to be something you're good at. There's a little mental pitfall here I want to warn you about: we often devalue the things we're good at. Because they don't feel difficult to us, we can start to think they don't matter. We may have a tendency to think that the best thing to do is the hardest thing, but that's not always going to be true. In fact, we're going to be a lot more effective as a group if we specialize.

Learning that a *hug*e amount of the supposed human interactions we have had online over the past 10 years or so have been fake—whether actual bots or human propagandists sowing division—is scary. But on the other hand, I kind of feel more hope for humanity. I feel hope that if we can learn to recognize, circumvent, & avoid such manipulation & noise generation, maybe better human connection is possible. Maybe we aren't *quite* as closed off from each other as we thought.
