I think a democratic leadership might be able to arrest the slide towards a dictatorship, but the chance of that is quite low - it would require a socialist to win the democratic nomination, and I just don’t see that happening. Anything less than a socialist would inadequately address the underlying material conditions which foment fascism, so there would be four years of neoliberalism or social democracy or whatever, another four years of worsening conditions among the working class - thereafter, the authoritarian dictatorship would come into power.
I think the best way - probably, the only way - to prevent dictatorship would be for the working class to continue organizing and building a people-led direct action movement, like the Black Panther Party did.

I agree with the first paragraph, but I disagree with the second, the media is owned and controlled by the ruling class, they’re not an ally or a weapon that we can really use, except in extremely niche cases. What we really need to do is organize the working class, and the best weapon that the ruling class have against class-conscious organizing is elections. Instead of spending our energy and efforts on building our own movements, the Democrats absorb all of that, parasitically siphoning all of the blood, sweat, and tears of (mainly young) voters to run their campaigns for them, which instead could have gone into a worker-led movement actually capable of shaking the foundations of power.
That’s why I care so much about trying to get people to come to terms with the reality, that the democrats are not going to save us, elections aren’t going to save us, we need to find an alternative path towards achieving our goals. I encourage people to vote for their preferred candidates, but not to expect them to actually improve anything.

Personally, I think correcting misinformation is very important, especially when it’s around such an important topic like “is my nation’s government democratically elected” and “am I free”, especially especially when the answer to both is “no”, so yeah, I think it is useful, actually, but of course, you’re welcome to disagree.
I’m not denying that the Trump administration is terrible. I do disagree that “it’s not a 10% difference anymore”, I’d say it’s probably closer to a 5% difference, if even that. The thing is, if you’re privileged enough, it’s very, very hard to really understand that, because you’ve never really been properly exposed to it - for example, through homelessness - so that’s a very difficult (probably impossible) position to convince someone out of. That’s why I didn’t really address it, because there’s not really any productive conversations to be had there.
I genuinely appreciate the thoughtful and respectful feedback, though. Thanks <3

This is exactly the problem. Everyone would! But the Democrats are never going to let a true leftist candidate be the presidential nominee, we saw that in 2016 where they transmuted Bernie Sander’s victory into Hillary Clinton’s defeat.

I totally understand that, and I completely sympathize with the harm reduction position, but it’s a trap!
If you always vote blue no matter who, then the Democrats have no incentive to ever become more progressive - they already have your vote, they don’t need to appeal to you by advancing progressive policies. On the other hand, they have lots of incentives to shift towards the right, to appeal to their wealthy donors. The result is that the democrats will always be ever so slightly better than the republicans, but both parties shift towards the right and authoritarianism over time.
This means that, in the short term, what seems to be harm reduction, is actually long-term harm maximization. Every election, both parties get worse. This brings us to 2024, where the lesser evil candidate was a pro-genocidal protofascist.
We can’t just keep doing the “don’t blame me, I voted for Kodos” bit or things will never get better, only ever worse.

If all we do is vote, the trolley will continue to run over everyone. That isn’t defeatist, it’s a recognition of reality. This isn’t defeatist at all, you just need to recognize that the change you want to see needs to come from an alternative source. Vote Blue No Matter Who is how we ended up with fascism. We need to acknowledge that fact, then we can start to change it.
Have hope, a better future is possible, but it probably won’t come from electoral politics. We need to build an organized labor movement and start taking real action.
The Black Panther Party is a great model for this!

I’m a mobility scooter user - don’t feel bad for us, these devices are incredibly liberating, in a really life-changing way.
Movies and stuff love to show disabled people as unhappy to be “stuck in a chair” but in the real world most disabled people are very thankful for their assistive technology because the alternative is never going anywhere or doing anything.

If he’s a US citizen, he’s better off refusing to enter any PIN. That’s protected by the 5th amendment. If not a citizen and this was in a port of entry context, then he would still have the 5th amend

At least on an iPhone, if the device has been unlocked since powering on, then forensic tools such as Cellebrite’s can extract information from the phone. The absolute safest bet is to perform a wipe.

GrapheneOS has a feature which automatically restarts the phone if it hasn’t been interacted with after some user-configurable delay. For example, you could configure the phone to automatically reboot if it hasn’t been used for an hour. This way, even if my phone is seized, that reboot timer is ticking. Once it reboots, the encryption on the phone is basically unbreakable.

I totally disagree. My tax money goes towards paying for a military, the genocide in Palestine, the funding of the police, the funding of prisons, the funding of the courts, and so on. I object to all of those institutions. I want to see the state collapse, because it is an instrument of oppression.
This isn’t out of selfishness, rather the total opposite.
