@dangoodin @Thad Maybe I was too quick to judge casual anthropomorphisms. But I am frequently annoyed by the same kind of responsibility-washing with computers in general. “The computer decided to…” No, a programmer or a manager or some human decided to, they just aren’t present for the throttling they deserve.

@dangoodin I’d say neither is okay, but when you’re anthropomorphizing an OS (or a car or a stand mixer or any other object we anthropomorphize), you are taking something you know isn’t human and putting a face on it to make the explanation more approachable or just more cute. The not OK part about anthropomorphizing an LLM is I think a lot of people don’t see it as a machine to begin with. That is to say, the dangerous part is people are *not* anthropomorphizing, they are drawing an equivalence.

I got a screwdriver and a good shop to recommend. This is a small local hardware store, one guy there. I ask for a narrow flat blade screwdriver and he shows me what they have on the rack. I find a 3/16” that looks it would work, but it has the usual trapezoidal head. I measure it and it’s almost exactly 1/4”, so I’m not sure it’ll fit.
“You could just grind that off,” he offers.
“Yeah, but I don’t have a grinder.”
“Oh, you can use ours.”
“Really!?”
“Yeah, sure.”
“Then I’ll take it!”
He rings me up, then leads me back to the grinder and lets me loose. Screwdriver worked great. :)
So if you need some tool help on the north side of Chicago, go to Andersonville Hardware. I’ll definitely be back.

@moertel Hmmm so when I do a one-time donation through something like Kofi the recipient is legally required to get my billing address? I know they do if I donate through PayPal, but I guess I figured there were some middlemen would would shield that kind of thing.

@moertel Patreon works for me but I have no problem working outside of that. Currently giving ICM a recurring donation through PayPal. (Personally I’m more likely to give money if it doesn’t involve the recipient having any knowledge about who it came from but I understand that’s a much rarer thing).
