I really appreciate that the kids have picked another funny number, sometimes I need more than three example constants in my tests.

Excellent post from Ralf Jung on how to think about all the scary systems stuff we do, from the perspective of Rust's abstract machine model.

I usually don't use a desktop wallpaper (black screen is fine, thanks) but this amazing remix of one of our mechanical drawings at work was too good to pass up.

Into the "cooling off period" of doing my taxes.

US taxes are unnecessarily difficult, but I've been doing this a while, so it takes me a couple hours.

But then I let it sit for a few days in case I remember some form, or expense, or entire source of income that I managed to forget in the first pass.

Only then can I put anything in the mail.

I learned this the hard way.

I'm just imagining the judge's reaction when someone explains "no, really, I fed this code with license A through a program and asked it nicely to produce license B!"

It's too bad Richard Posner retired, his response to this would have been epic.

Got a LinkedIn recruiter email titled "help prevent the biggest bubble in tech history."

...alright, I'm listening...

"here’s why SF Compute is worth your time: they’re solving one of the most dangerous problems in the AI infra boom by creating a financial layer that stabilizes and protects GPU buyers and lenders."

I see, so by "prevent" you mean "prolong." Got it.

At the last minute, I submitted a talk suggestion to RustWeek this year, and... they took it! 🎉

So, in May, I will be presenting on patterns in systems software that are not worth carrying into Rust because they go against the grain of the language. And I would like your help.

Have you tried to translate or recreate some systems-y software into Rust, only to be tripped up by a data structure, implementation pattern, or the like -- and found an alternative that unblocked you? I'm curious to hear about it. Surely I haven't seen them all.

Some examples from my journey below. 1/

@arstechnica@mastodon.social, which I've read faithfully since 2000, appears to have published an article containing made up quotes from a blogger, and then instead of publishing a retraction...just made the article disappear.

I'm looking forward to their published explanation of why I shouldn't cancel my subscription -- if I wanted to read made up nonsense, there are machines for that now.

Here's the Wayback link to the page they've scrubbed. https://web.archive.org/web/20260213194851/https://arstechnica.com/ai/2026/02/after-a-routine-code-rejection-an-ai-agent-published-a-hit-piece-on-someone-by-name/

Hm, potential 45-base RNA quine discovered.

The conditions are _somewhat_ contrived but only somewhat.

**Edited:** Apparently Ars Technica posts articles containing made up information, so I've removed the link. This article didn't contain a direct link to the paper that I can share, only a paywalled article, so don't get excited about the RNA quine just yet.

Found a new Tindie order this morning and started a stopwatch.

It currently takes me 4m30s to fulfill an order, from "figure out what to pick from the drawer" to "on the porch waiting for USPS."

This is a domestic order. International orders take a _lot_ longer, due to the need to manage IOSS/VAT info, print customs forms, etc. I should probably charge a handling fee for international orders (I don't charge one for domestic).
