The cal.com project announced they're going closed source, with the reason stated that open source is risky due to AI vulnerability scanning 🤔

Like with mass firings, I think we'll see other VC-backed "Commercial Open Source" projects use AI as an excuse and opportunity to close their code now that AI is reducing the cost to entry for competitors, and for bypassing licensing or limitations in open core.

The licensing for cal.com was always questionable anyway:

March was a bit of a low productivity month. Mainly focused on BookStack releases and patches. Hoping April will be much more productive.

@miklo section 7 is quite limited. It does not specify the form or placement of attribution/legal notice, and whether a header logo image can be considered as such is questionable.

@daniel @Gina onlyoffice's terms depend on inventive interpretation of the AGPLv3, in a way which goes against the intent and spirit. I'm not a legal expert though. I'd imagine it'd come down to how it plays out in court in practice. Euro office is in the right IMO, since the AGPLv3 under normal interpretation allows their requirements to be removed as further restrictions

@Gina@fosstodon.org Yeah, I'm not sure either, but I appreciate the potential diversity of options and the idea of breaking OnlyOffice's author's non-FOSS-spirited control.

OnlyOffice is getting upset that they've been forked, after they attempted to set sketchy license additions to prevent forks:

https://www.onlyoffice.com/blog/2026/03/onlyoffice-flags-license-violations-in-euro-office-project-by-nextcloud-and-ionos

I explain their questionable license, including a conversation I had with their legal manager, on isitreallyfoss:

https://isitreallyfoss.com/projects/onlyoffice/

I hope Euro-Office succeeds to provide a FOSS-friendly alternative, will need a lot of effort though to continue a project like that, especially if OnlyOffice play nasty.

ONLYOFFICE flags license violations in “Euro-Office” project

The “Euro-Office” initiative is an evident and material violation of ONLYOFFICE licensing terms and principles of international intellectual property law.

@thomasjsn Haha, yeah, might have forced some new issues in images elsewhere! TBH, this image generation was something I had been meaning to do for ages, but didn't have the time. Ended up being something I tested AI/Claude on to build out the majority of the script (with some manual tweaking afterwards).

@thomasjsn Yup! Images are only generated if missing, unless a force flag is passed, so it's very quick outside of first run (which itself is still just a few seconds on my dev machine).

@thomasjsn 🤦 Didn't notice that one, thanks, will fix! The images are generated via a PHP script which is ran as part of deployment. It scans over the source post files and creates a PNG for each. Not in an open repo but happy to share the script if you'd like.

@falkheiland 👍 Might be a bit too specific of a case to be worth listing in the readme, but maybe something to add to the new community rules page (https://www.bookstackapp.com/about/community-rules/) if it starts consuming time.
