For my username(s): GirthyWand. Alternatively: Sex knob | Giant hammer. Amusingly, my wife's maiden name was Love Flute, which suits her, and now she's Love Pole. Of course I'm not going to tell her either of these names.

Congratulations on responding to the first paragraph of his post. lemmy.world/post/44873477/23080810 (The one that made you super cross. Sure nothing from your sandbox ever makes it into production. Great. Very wise and very careful.) No congratulations on responding to any of the rest of what I said.

Ah yes, lovely mcp. Lovely anthropic mcp. Make sure you give anthropic lots of money and use their tools and then you’ll be completely safe plugging the output of the llm into the os. Definitely fine yes. I bet you your contract with them says they’re not liable for shit their llm does to your files, your environment or your repositories, mcp or no mcp. Fool.

You’ll be the 4753rd guy with the oops my llm trashed my setup and disobeyed my explicit rules for keeping it in check. You know programmers who use llms believe they’re much more productive because they keep getting that dopamine hit, but when you actually measure it, they’re slower by about 20%. You appointed yourself boss over a fast and plausible intern who pastes and edits a LOT of stack overflow code, but never really understands it and absolutely is incapable of learning. You either spend almost all of your time in code review now for your stupid sycophantic llm interns who always tell you you’re right but never learn from you, or you’re checking in vast quantities of shit to your projects. You know really subtle, hard to find bugs on rare cases that pass your CI every single time? Or ones that no one in their right mind would have made, but yet they compile and look right at first glance. They’re now your main type of bug. You are rotting your projects with your random number generator. And you think that all the money you’re playing for your blagging llms protects you from them fucking up everything for you. But it doesn’t. And you’ll also find that your contract with your llm supplier expressly excludes them from any liability whatsoever arising from you using it instead pre-blaming you for trusting it.

no its just the free models… You just have to be aware… when using a cheap model You: just the cheap ones I never said that. Ohhhhhhhhh ok yes of course you never said or implied that. Not your repeated message at all. And yet you can’t keep away from adressing your criticism towards free or cheap LLMs! It’s like your subtext or your underlying belief is that of you just pay big tech enough money and they can just build a big enough set of server farms, it’ll be ok. No, it will not be ok and the enshittification has begun from an already shitty base point. All LLMs are shit, the cheap and free ones are indeed just easier to spot as generating shit, if you ask them about things you know about. But you have to accept that they’re ALL shit and STOP making get out clauses for the expensive ones by firing your criticisms exclusively at the cheap or free ones. Giving ANY LLM executive power over your data is A BIG MISTAKE because you’re putting your data in the control of something which operates, at its heart, as a random number generator. They’re trained to sound right. People trust them because they sound right. This is a fundamental error.

Everyone else who has any sense: llms are shit and you shouldn’t trust them with executive power. You: just the cheap ones. Me: no, all of them. What kind of lunatic trusts control of anything important to a fundamentally stochastic process?

The only time it's ever in the least bit slow to load is when it's on a onedrive folder at work and Microsoft don't cache it locally so there's a delay getting the thing in the first place. Does metapad have regex find and replace? If so, smaller and even faster is appealing.

WordPad writes fairly clean rtf. Word writes incredibly bloated messy rtf. No, I don't want to use a .docx or .pdf generating library, I just wanna slap some strings together and have it come out ready to print yet editable by non techy users. I use wordpad to write my templates.

I use EditPadLite and have done for a loong time. It has regex find and replace, is fast and you can tell it to display word wrapped or not, numbered lines or not, font, size, colours, syntax highlighting scheme, all based on file extensions. I have it as my default text editor and for all kinds of other files as well as text. If I want to do major coding, I fire up the IDE and choose from my recent projects, but if I want to quickly edit some xml or a single source file, I double click it and edit it in EditPadLite.

If you're still on windows 10, notepad is fine, but you might not be getting security updates for the whole OS. If you're on windows 11, notepad is annoying, bloated, has AI, and is a security risk. Also the OS updates you are getting might well be written by AI, and we all know how infallible AI is, right?

The invention of the printing press and of the dictionary at a time of great language change has been problematic for English spelling. Why do you feel English is better than French? I think English has most of the problems of French and then a whole bunch of its own, but I’m interested in your perspective.

Ah excellent, thank you. I think the numbers speaking Irish Gaelic are incredibly small, whereas Welsh is still a commonly spoken first language away from south Wales. I looked up the welsh for toes and found toesau which is a Welsh pluralised borrow from English, but also bysedd traed, which is indeed fingers of the foot, so I think Wales should be added to the stripey red and green part of the map as per other comments.

I think you’re allowing this to make you angrier than you should. You clearly speak English, which I think of as the mongrel child of two or three Germanic languages and a Romance one, and not in a good way, so I also think it’s the most fucked up and inconsistent one of the lot. The only thing it’s got going for it as a language is genderless nouns.

(Imgur deleted a bunch of content for the crime of not having a paid subscription, and they geoblock my country because the data protection commission threatened them with a fine for selling children’s browsing history and they’d rather take it out on users than simply filter the accounts they auto-tagged as children out of the data they were selling. We left reddit for a reason. Imgur is no less moneygrabbing.)

Well I’m petty sure you were coming across as obnoxious and the vote count seems to agree. If most people are interpreting the things you said earlier in the thread negatively, maybe the cause is in the writer than the reader. Maybe have another look and see if you mightn’t have written a bit of a sourpost originally, and reconsider your tone next time if you genuinely mean no harm.

Sounded to me like you were firing off at someone for having a private personal project by claiming that you would personally intervene to prevent them making any money from their code, then later you told them that they were being self aggrandizing. That’s how it comes across. You doubled down on your threat with detail, which doesn’t give readers the context to be able to deduce that you meant to be in the slightest bit self aware or apologetic, so without re-quoting yourself, it came across as hypocritical. Maybe “sorry, that was somewhat facetious and self-aggrandizing of me” and then not doubling down might have come across better. That’s what I think, anyway.
