Technically you covered this, but the narcissism rolled up with many of those other things, speaks to abuse, trauma, and how he has always been in an environment where getting professional help was never an option. So now he's everyone's problem. Passing the buck on abused people is far too normal around here. I'm not saying he's due a redemption arc (burned FAR too many bridges by now). Rather he's a symbol of mental health around the US too. He's a shambling husk made up of pure psychological damage, making every day an exercise in inflicting uncountable numbers of people with more of the same. And all of it was preventable if there weren't so many institutional and social failures to address it, at every step in their life.

I often wondered about this behavior. Every so often I would see someone go to their car in a parking lot, sit down in the driver’s seat and just… go nowhere. Engine is running, music is on, driver has a 1000-yard stare. It’s so far removed from my own experience - I never do this - that for the longest time, I couldn’t wrap my head around it. Somehow, the phrase ‘after a long day’ made it click. So thanks, OP. Apartment living also showed me that some people just hang out alone in the car instead of in the apartment. That I can understand as some units can be downright claustrophobic if you have a big family. Want privacy? Get a car payment I guess. :(

Actually, no, I really think they shouldn’t. In such matters I think it’s crucial to stick to just the facts and journalistic integrity (such as it is). Elevating personal opinion to the same level as wartime photography, reporting, data, etc. has dangerous ramifications for all involved. I’m aware that newspapers and other news/media outlets have bias, one way or another, but I think it important to draw a line and minimize that bias to the greatest extent possible; saying no to op-eds on war is such a line. WRT to opinions and discussion on war, we have other kinds of media and public forums to serve that.

I think opinion pieces are great for matters of taste. War, on the other hand, is about life, death, money, and politics all rolled into one giant horror-show. Publishing op-ed on such a topic, on such a well-known paper, is basically elevating -whatever- to the same level of validity as actual journalism. It’s a really bad show on the Post’s part.

This reminded me of something. I once tried a Chinese soup kit that was packed to the gills with funky ingredients: pickled vegetables, dank mushrooms, and fermented things beyond description. The smell was overpowering and, in the mouth, entirely unpleasant. The experience left me with one singular thought that refused to leave my mind in the same way the bizarre flavor simply refused to leave my nose and mouth. It was like frat-house bong water served in an old shoe. Not to long ago, I was mourning the loss of the Conversatron 3000. It was a forum site that was nothing but comedy writers, using the medium to tell a flavor of joke and observational humor that could only work on that medium. A lot of it had this formula of “dumb question/observation”, “dumber retort”, “setup”, and finally “witty punchline.” Sometimes, that would just thread on for multiple rounds. Rarely, threads were open to user comments too. Now I understand why that hasn’t come back. We don’t need it anymore.

Honestly, this is a golden teachable moment in critical thinking. Jr here is starting to ponder the implausibility of a myth. Encourage more thought, guide away from magical thinking, answer their questions honestly, and reward them for arriving at better answers. I’m going to call it like I saw it, a very long time ago. You have an “open” product that is basically purpose built to make data hoarding and piracy practical, yet it requires a login with a central service. I don’t care what justification anyone thinks makes that worthwhile or even a good compromise. Signaling to any corporate entity that you’re in possession of such a thing is a bad idea to begin with. They shouldn’t even know you exist. That information, along with anything else you do with the product is compromising to you and can be sold for money if aggregated with everyone else’s data. If you find this rant out of place in our modern world, I’d like to point to the concept of shifting baselines. This didn’t used to be normal and nothing short of greed continues the behavior. The technology before this ran/runs without anyone knowing. Consider VLC, or XBMC.
