Colleagues, is there a Linux image manipulation tool like imagemagick that doesn't require some weird XML configuration for large images and reliably reads TIFFs?

Unfortunately, if you uploaded your stuff to some "free" platform riddled with ads and scams, it is much more likely to exist many decades later than if you uploaded it to some nice for-pay platform.

@edsu Yes, the Hans Haacke piece described in the article was talking to the web through @webrecorder's pywb recording proxy, which is just excellent. Privacy problems due to "dragnet capture" is not so much an issue if you're mainly focusing on API calls, as they don't trigger all the requests that access via a browser or crawler would. Also, the artwork-specific web archives are not necessarily publicly accessible in the same way a classic web archive would.

Another summary that I think is interesting in hindsight: The practice that documentation of an artwork and an instantiation of an artwork are separate things, and documentation can never be the "real" thing, 1) is rooted in the museum logic of "artwork is taken out of storage for exhibition" that doesn't work well with most digital art and 2)—perhaps paradoxically—prevents useful historicization of digital art.

My essay "In between performance and documentation" was published on Rhizome:
https://rhizome.org/editorial/2023/may/05/in-between-performance-and-documentation/

It's about digital art conservation where documentation resources created by digitally recording observable behavior in a structured format can be integrated with fully performing parts of an artwork.

Originally this was written for the rather cool book "Documentation as Art" edited by @aaaannet@post.lurk.org and Gabriella Giannachi, featuring authors such as @katrina@post.lurk.org, @spinster@mastodon.green, @GIFmodel@olia.geocities.institute, and many more!
