The atmospheric river currently soggifying the US west coast is a good 100 miles north of me, but the big (terrestrial) rivers through and around town do have a lot of their sources up in the section of the Cascades in that rainfall's path, so we're seeing some impacts down here at my favorite accessible riverside hang too.

As a budget thing, I've taken to buying family packs of chicken leg quarters, breaking them down into drumsticks and thighs, removing the skin, and then packaging everything up in individual servings for the freezer (and freezing the chicken skin too for rendering when I have enough to make it worthwhile). I was in the midst of doing all this at my kitchen table when suddenly I realized I had an audience - my cat. I've done this prep routine any number of times without Mr Swayze showing any interest, but there he was tonight, pacing about my little kitchen around and behind me, definitely fascinated by all this raw carnivore-food aroma his human was releasing. It wasn't his full-on begging mode as he didn't vocalize (oh he's got a whole vocabulary of mrrts and meows, believe me!) but his level of interest was definitely clear. Fortunately the old gent is a little too arthritic to go table-diving, but I did hasten to get everything sealed up and stowed away safely before things got out of hand. 😹

Meanwhile on the home front: Mr Swayze appears to be completely recovered from last week's dental work. I am relieved - and also glad I no longer have to dose him with that liquid painkiller they prescribed for him. I was incapable of getting the syringe aimed into his cheek pouch as instructed, so the bitter taste of it hit his tongue, causing him to hate it even more. It's a tribute to how much he's bonded to me that he even put up with it the full week, and getting a Churu snack immediately afterward helped a bit, but he was reaching the limit of his patience with it by the end.
Aaaaaand also the damn smoke detector malfunctioned noisily again the other day, even with freshly bought batteries in it. So now it's back off the wall and disemboweled of batteries again, and I have a message in to the property manager that the whole detector is probably gone bad prematurely and needs to be replaced.

Meanwhile on the home front: one of my apartment's smoke detectors went off for no reason this afternoon - one of its malfunction signals I'm pretty sure, three quick beeps then a whole 60 seconds or more then repeat - and I once again ran into the reality that I as a disabled person who is not safe on ladders have no way of reaching the damn things. I was able to summon a gracious and helpful neighbor to come disconnect the thing till I can get to the store tomorrow for replacement batteries, my tentative diagnosis. But I was painfully reminded of last summer when all three detectors went full false alarm at 7am - I felt so badly over dragging Helpful Neighbor out of bed at that hour. Figuring there has got to be a better way, I went net-diving and discovered that yes, there are smoke detectors with various remote control options. The question now becomes seeing if the housing co-op management is cool with me getting a different detector from the model they have throughout the co-op. Since I'm in one of the ADA units, I think it would be an easy yes, but who knows if there's some technical thing I don't know about. We'll see.
