Progenitor of the Weird Knife Wednesday feature column. Is “column” the right word? Anyway, apparently I also coined the Very Specific Object nomenclature now sporadically used in the 3D printing community. Yeah, that was me. This must be how Cory Doctorow feels all the time these days.

RIP to the Microsoft support forums, then. Although if these get tanked in the search results that will probably be a small net benefit for society given that not a single problem has ever been successfully solved by the Microsoft support forums in the entire history of computing.

Correct. They only care about this stuff because they don't want anyone to use it on *them.* If you don't believe me, just note how basically every single weapons ban written in the US magically has an exception for law enforcement carved into it. So... We (not me, but all you Californian people) can't have, say, a butterfly knife but for some reason the cops can? What do they need it for that we don't, exactly?

The WTF here is not necessarily that some component on the circuit board failed, but that the manufacturer charges $400-$1000 for it with a straight face and gets away with it when they undoubtedly have that board made in China for about $4 per unit.

I appreciate the intent of having a port readily accessible for e.g. grandma to find without groveling behind the dusty TV, but that does not excuse not having another one in a more sensible location.

DVI is not supposed to carry audio, but in practice in many cases it does. That’s because internally both devices are likely to implement DVI by just shoving an HDMI output through the connector anyway. The jury is out on whether or not this has any licensing implications. I’ll be damned if I know, because I was always under the impression that the part that incurred licensing fees was the HDMI port itself. I rediscover this fun fact a couple of times every year when one of our office machines decides to randomly start piping its audio out of the monitor sounding like a mouse trying to play the kazoo through its sinuses rather than the speakers that are right there, and I somebody complains at me and I have to schlep over there and switch the audio output back. Apparently this is expected enough behavior that cheap bottom of the barrel PC monitors bother to include speakers for it.

What you described as impossible to find is how basically every security DVR system has worked for decades. I have two Lorex branded boxes at work and a Night Owl one at home, and neither of them require anyone’s “cloud.” They’re remotely accessible via your browser or a smartphone app although, yes, you do need to know your public facing IP address and poke the appropriate hole in your firewall for it.

Every X seconds is pretty generous. My Subaru only seems to poll the sensors every few minutes, and only when the wheel speed is above 35 MPH or so, at least via what I’ve observed with my diagnostic tool. The sensors are battery powered and I suspect the low refresh rate is a deliberate gambit to conserve battery life. You are correct on the ID point, though. They can contain up to 16 hexidecimal digits as far as I’ve seen, and while there doesn’t seem to be any mechanism for truly enforcing uniqueness the chances of an ID collision are so low that you may as well consider it impossible. Some aftermarket sensors can be wirelessly reprogrammed with an arbitrary ID, though, which may be of marginal utility for the truly paranoid. (My diagnostic tool can do this, too. The intended use case is cloning the ID from an OEM sensor for a car whose TPMS relearn procedure is more trouble than it’s worth.) Regardless of your vehicle’s polling frequency, most sensors can be woken up any time by a specific radio pulse, which my diagnostic tool can also do, and the range is surprisingly long. Just my car’s own BMS where the receiver is (above the rear left wheel well) can pick up the sensors in my snow tire rims even when said rims are sitting in their storage rack inside my garage, about three car lengths away.

Random Internet pedantry/trivia: In the context of this comic, the apple or whatever it is doesn’t need to be able to speak Mandarin to understand the orange because they live in a comic and everything they say is written. It only needs to be able to read either simplified or traditional Chinese. The various dialects spoken throughout China are variously divergent, but the written language is by and large the same across the board. Denizens of different regions may pronounce what’s written differently, or even very differently if you’re in a Cantonese vs. Mandarin situation, but the underlying meaning behind the written words is still the same. This is as it was explained to me by my boss when I worked in a Chinese restaurant, anyhow. As he tells it, when traveling even as a native “Chinese” speaker to remote corners of China (he primarily speaks Cantonese) you’ll find that you and the locals are completely unintelligible to one another if you try to talk. Always carry a pen and paper with you; if you write down whatever you’re trying to get across pretty much everyone can magically understand it. …Also, based on what the orange is offering the apple might want to learn to read Chinese in a hurry.

It’s also an incredibly stupid bureaucratic clusterfuck of the magnitude that only customs and border people can achieve. Surely there should be some mechanism wherein you can send a letter or something to the Russian authorities to inform them, “Hey, we’re trying this stupid stunt and here is our plan, let us make our declarations now and we’ll pick up all the paperwork on the way once we get there.” But there probably isn’t, and then you wind up with crap like this. The tinniest of tin-pot jumped up little dictators are never to actually be found in your nation’s capital. Instead they’re all lined up along its borders acting like these various lines in the sand were laser-etched there by god and aren’t ultimately just arbitrary and, indeed, historically much more fluid than they’d like to pretend.

Task Manager is launched by the listener in winlogon if you use the Ctrl + Shift + Esc method though, right? I’m pretty sure you can still launch Task Manager, and from there attempt to relauch Explorer, even if Explorer is borked or not running. You’d just have to know how to do that and that you can. That’s what I always do when Explorer’s ears inexplicably catch fire and I’m either too lazy or too naively hopeful to reboot. For anyone following along at home, Windows Explorer is also responsible for displaying the start menu/taskbar. In the example in the article there’s something else funky going on inside Explorer, though, because the taskbar and even the desktop icons are all there, it’s just not rendering correctly. (Explorer is also responsible for showing all of your desktop icons.)
