So, trans guys, I'm curious... What are the absurdly common trans guy names, if any? Like, every other trans girl in my cohort seems to be named Jessica, Zoe, or Luna, depending on where she falls on the basic to extra scale. (I was almost a Jessica if my wife hadn't vetoed it.) I don't think it's actually 50% but it's high enough to be a meme. 😅

Is there something similar for trans guys these days? If so, what are they? I'm curious. Is everyone going Steve or something?

I've been using NearlyFreeSpeech.NET for my DNS and hosting stuff for a while. They've been a great, simple, zero-bullshit option. But that name has always had me a bit worried. "Free speech" has tricky associations these days.

But today I finally got around to trying to update my name and login info with them and I saw this nugget:

I don't know who needs to hear this but there is no such thing as masculine or feminine hobbies or interests.

We think we're all feminists and we already know this but...

It's really easy when you're figuring yourself out to get caught up on this. So so many transfemmes do. (🙋🏻‍♀️ I was one of them for a while.) And in transfemme spaces, we often overemphasize our femininity to the point of making it sound like if you still like "boy" things then you're not one of us. But it's heavily slanted by girls reveling in their new-found freedom and joy in things they were never allowed to like as a kid. It's sort of an overcorrection away from the sexism we absorbed as eggs.

But the reality is that there aren't "boy" things and "girl" things. Society says there are. They've been traumatizing us with that one since birth. Literally. Your first article of clothing as a newborn human is probably gender coded. But it's bullshit. You are who you are and you like what you like and they're not the same thing.

I had a cis woman friend in college who was the biggest Packers fan you've ever met. There was plenty of girl about her but when the Packers game was in, she was there in her jersey, eyes locked on the television.

I actually really like being an engineer. I check in with myself every 6 months or so to make sure. I still do. I may not be all engineer all the time like I was before. But that's because, before, "engineer" was the only part of myself that I could embrace in a socially acceptable way. So I made it my whole thing. It's not my whole thing now but it's still very much one of my things.

We really have to deconstruct these associations. They're so damaging. This is the stuff society uses to keep us in the closet. The antidote isn't to just switch sides and wear nothing but pink sweaters and mini skirts. If that's you, great! Wear it! And if you need to jump head-first into the ball pit of feminine interests to rediscover all the stuff you would have liked if society hadn't been determined to keep things from you, then do that.

But at the end of the day, the antidote to sexism isn't switching sides, it's breaking down the gender binary. It's giving every little girl the freedom to be masc and every little boy the freedom to be femme.

And, just so we're clear, this is NOT a substitute for transition. Who you are and what you want for your body is not the same as what you want to do with your free time. If you're happier being a man or being a woman or being non-binary, then be that. It doesn't matter if you spend your free time with a sewing machine or a video game controller. You are who you are. 💜

IDK who needs to hear this but figuring out your gender identity isn't a prerequisite to being trans or transitioning.

Sure, it's nice to be able to walk into a gender clinic or a therapist's office and say, "I identify as X. One Y2X transition, please." but that's often not the way it works. The identity language we use is kinda rubbish, actually, and often puts the cart before the horse.

Some people, like myself, never really get that clear-as-a-bell sense of gender identity. Maybe it's because we're a bit agender or our neurospice gets in the way or maybe it's because the trauma beat it out of us or maybe it's something else. It doesn't really matter. At least for me, transition was much more about what I wanted than what I felt like I already was.

Many people have a sense of gender that doesn't really fit into any of the boxes. They know what it is but the language doesn't exist to be able to really pin it down or precisely describe it to someone else. They could maybe say, "I identity as..." but it's hard to fill in the blank in a way that makes sense to anyone but themselves.

And for many, many people, transition is a journey and they try something and it's kinda in the right direction but they want more or they want something slightly different. You don't have to have this one identity that you've had since you were 6 and have stuck to ever since. You're allowed to grow and change.

It's all valid. There are no rules. There is no "trans enough." If you look at your AGAB and you're like, "Nah, I don't wanna be stuck in that box my whole life.", that's all you need. Transition is about saying, "Fuck you!" to the rules and that includes rules set by other trans people.

RE: https://anarres.family/@faithisleaping/116037028264284693 This post brought to you by a heartbreaking moment in a figure skating documentary piece I watched this morning in which a male figure skater told his mom that he would be performing in an upcoming event with another man and his mom replied, "But isn't it supposed to be family-friendly? Won't there be kids watching?" That's the last time he's spoken to his mom. Hearing that, my heart broke. Given the context, he was probably out to his mom already. She was probably "fine" by her definition. But the moment he had the opportunity to finally represent the kind of love he felt in his heart on ice, it was "Think of the children!" Fuck her! I feel deeply for him but every "OMG! Why won't my son talk to me anymore?" feeling she's feeling now, she earned. Because here's the thing: He is thinking of the children. He's thinking of the little boys like him who watch ice skating, loving the artistry but hoping for and never seeing anyone like them on the ice. There are so many gay men in ice dance or interested in the sport and yet it's homophobic as hell. They're there but they're all performing heterosexuality on ice because that's what you have to do to have a career in that sport. And people like his own mother are why. So, yeah, he is "thinking of the children." There are more than just straight children out there and they need to see people like them represented. They need for us, the adults, to build a better world for them, one that doesn't make staying in the closet a prerequisite for participating in society or in their favorite sport. Trying to keep the world straight isn't "thinking of the children." It's just thinking of your own damn homophobia.

One of the really hard parts about being trans, at least for me, is just existing in the liminal spaces.

As humans, we often struggle to deal with the chaos and uncertainty in our world. Many people deal with that chaos by looking for patterns and making up rules by which they believe the world behaves. Then, by following those rules and expecting everyone else to do the same, they can make their world nice and predictable. The gender binary is one of those. There's lots of others, too, like moral rules about what makes a good person or psychological rules about how people behave.

But as a trans person, you're the exception to the rule. You're born one thing but you are the other. And often it's not just the gender rules to which we're the exception. A lot of us are neurospicy and break the behavioral expectations. Or maybe you left the town that nobody ever leaves.

Being an exception brings uncertainty. It brings uncertainty to the cis people because suddenly their precious rules on which they've built their view of the world don't work. When they freak about this, we call that transphobia.

But it also brings a lot of uncertainty to the individual person. Suddenly you realize you have needs that most people don't or even that other people think are crazy. The things that bring you joy are things you've been told your whole life only bring pain. The parts of your body you want to cut off and discard are things most people with those parts value above all others. And yet filling those needs brings joy and relief and contentment unlike anything else.

And as such, we have to carve our own paths. The world around us is neatly divided into counties and townships and has well-paved roads that millions of people take every day and yet we pick up our napsacks like hobbits and set out across the corn fields. The roads... Where we're going, the roads won't take us.

And that can be scary. It's hard not knowing where you're headed and what will happen next. The world is scary enough when you think it makes sense.

But there's also a beauty in embracing the chaos. We're more resilient than we think, more capable of adapting. Maybe we don't like that career but maybe that's a better one waiting for us. Maybe those family relationships aren't working but maybe there's a chosen family right there, ready to affirm and embrace us. Maybe some change to our body is scary but maybe there's a joy like we could never imagine on the other side of it.

Just as we break their rules for what one can or should do or be, we also break their rules for what can bring happiness. We find joy in so many places they'd never expect. At the end of the day, their rules simply don't apply to us and we have to learn toss them aside and seek joy whenever we find it. Because there's so much they're missing. So much their rules will never let them see.
