Safeway had pork shoulder on a decent sale last weekend, so we bought one. I roasted it a few days ago and we’ve been pulling meat off for meals since then, but now I’m making an All Day Bolognese™ with the bulk of it. The bulk of the active time is simply chopping and sautéing aromatics, then it just goes in the oven for a while. The house already smells so good.

Our new oven has wifi* and it’s supposed to be able to update its own time, but it resolutely has the wrong hour today. I even tried toggling the setting off and on, which was fascinating because it would briefly flash the correct time before becoming wrong again. The problem with software eating the world is finding out how bad most software is.
* Please do not reply to me to tell me that it’s bad that I let it connect to the internet. Rest assured I know the risks and I am capable of configuring my local firewall and DNS to mitigate them.

Just had reason to cite this piece about the crispy gone soggy food texture. It holds up. (Paywall: disable JavaScript). https://www.bonappetit.com/story/crispy-gone-soggy

Had a UPS battery go bad last week, and I found out this morning (when my wife needed that computer) that I hadn't actually plugged everything back in after removing it. That's all fixed, but now it's been update after update after update after update after update* after update after update. Not kidding. In order: app store, NextCloud, app store again somehow, Microsoft Office Auto Updater (failed), manual Microsoft Office updates (*3 I had to do separately), MacOS, and OpenCore Legacy Patcher. Between Microsoft's failing delta updater and how slow the MacOS update was, I've been at this for more than two hours.
In the same amount of time I've done a full version upgrade on my OPNsense firewall, updated all the apps on my TrueNAS box, upgraded FreeBSD packages on my remote VPS, and done a Linux Mint dot release update that required a reboot on this old MacBook Pro.
I'm not going to be one of those Switch To Linux reply guys, but I can't help but notice how much more smoothly things went on everything that wasn't the Mac.

I love getting ActBlue donation requests via text from candidates in places I don't live. I love that they all come "from" different numbers every time so I can't just block one number. I especially love that there appears to be no way at all to make them stop.

I know it's fun to complain about Daylight Saving Time, but how many of the complaints are just related to the jarring shift of an hour all at once? What would happen if we all just agreed to follow the sunrise for the roughly five weeks in the spring that it takes for the day to shift by an hour? Say that every Sunday for five weeks we all just got up 12 minutes earlier than the day before. Would that be so terrible? (Shut up, software developers, this is just a thought experiment).
