@liv@quack.social It's infrastructure. The profit of infrastructure is in the efficiency it provides. Sure, train tickets may not make up the cost of running the trains, but getting people and goods to places cheap and fast greatly increases the ability for people to work and partake in activities (be they commercial or cultural) in places farther away from their place of residence. And that means more workers, more customers, more tourists. Prosperity. Similar game theory applies to many other services. Investing in keeping your population healthy and happy is generally going to make them more efficient at being actually productive.
