which is fucking useless for actual progress sync of books because it doesn't handle concurrency (multiple readers reading the same content, potentially offline), and more importantly, modern ebook formats have no concept of "page" in transit. Oh, you read page 10? Awesome! Now do tell, is it page 10 on a 5" 800x480 eink display with 48px font size and giant margins/lineheights/word paddings, or is it page 10 on a 13" display of 2480x1860 resolution with 11px font size and barely any margins? Since you'll get wildly different results in both cases, and OPDS doesn't really allow for adapting this simple integer to a precise position. No, for that you require a proper locator scheme, something OPDS doesn't provide and cannot enforce. Page based progress is fine for fixed format publications - comics, PDF/DOCX files, etc., but that approach breaks irreparably the moment you switch to dynamically formatted content. In case of EPUV/MOBI/the various Kindle formats, you want to determine the reader's position based on the first and last paragraph/sentence visible on the reader and correlate that to a position within the actual files of the book, which is actually dynamic, as it can be resolved regardless if it's XML formatted EPUB or if you dumbed the book down to a simple TXT file. So no, OPDS's PSE is at best a stopgap solution for syncing progress.

I tried Kavita and immediately recoiled at the fact that basic features like progress sync or metadata matching are behind a paywall - literally features that don't cost the developers anything, while having open, active bug reports going back a year on these "premium" features. All while licensing the code under GPLv3...

A docker container is preferred, but again, CW isn't Calibre. Same database but completely different management system + also lacking a lot of the sync opportunities. The issue is that there's no _open_ protocol for library syncing. It doesn't exist because all big players (Amazon, Kobo/Rakuten, B&N, etc.) have their own proprietary system, and need no open alternatives. OPDS is a thing but it's meant to replicate a physical library (one you can walk into) in behaviour and approach, not a personal library (list all books I have and give me easy access to them). It's essentially just an RSS-style feed that has no defined structure, thus isn't software navigable - e.g. there's no guarantee you can list all book series, or all authors, and most implementations usually give you very roughly defined "recently added", or "hot now" book lists... I've actually been working on a solution for this, something that provides an almost Kindle library experience (see all your books from a remote server, sync down the remote ebook file, sync back read progress, filter/search based on book properties, etc.), while being flexible enough for non-readers applications as well. But I haven't even gotten to the point where I can define the API contract properly, let alone the backing database and mapping to Calibre. Honestly at this stage I feel like the best approach is starting from scratch, establishing modern requirements, and going from there.

Here's a reminder that Boox makes amazingly good e-readers in all form factors Amazon does (including a variety of tablets!), with stylus support (USI 2.0 for smaller devices, EMR for their Note series and above), fully open (recent Android versions, regular updates, unlockable bootloader, straightforward to root devices), support KOReader, with a solid built in reader (plus support for cloud sync, including syncing books to a free 10GB Boox server storage), support for OPDS (a better way to access your library than Calibre's sync, plus it can be utilised with most digital libraries too), and altogether quite well priced devices. At the moment I have on my hands a Go Color 7 gen2, a Note Air5 C, and a Palma2 Pro. The experience is surprisingly good for a "random Chinese brand", the hardware, compared to similarly priced devices, is superior (seriously, 4/6/8GB RAM, 64/128GB internal storage, SD card support), not to mention their customised e-ink waveforms (which give you near LCD-like scrolling with minimal trailing effect and little to no ghosting, something I can't say about my Kindles...) The only downside I found of these devices is the relatively bad battery life in locked/standby (due to Android, but you still easily get over a week per charge with average use, or about 20-22 hours of active use!), and the speakers... definitely not meant for audiobooks.

It's a pity Calibre to date refuses to be refactored into a self-hosted service. The core logic should be portable, with the app just being an interface to it, but no, the entire project is so much spaghetti it would feed the entire boot for over a year... such a shame.

A moderator cannot BAN your account. They can ban you from posting on their subreddit, and can, often baselessly, get you reported to admins (who 100% of the time side with the moderators), usually flagging any kind of modmail conduct as "threatening or harassment". I've literally got a warning because I dared to ask a mod why they banned me - their response being a 30 day mute and a report to the admins about "Hey! I was wondering why you banned me, as I don't think my comment broke any of the rules of the sub or Reddit" being threatening, and harassment....

Compared to some dark romance? Sure. I mean, very, very few things will top the femur scene in I Will Break You (the trigger warnings specifying "inappropriate use of thigh bone" were NOT joking), so compared, indeed tame. But for your average non-smut reader, there's a lot of emphasis on... milking. Though still not as full of smut as e.g. Kiss Of The Basilisk. Which is like, 98% pure porn.

Often this is because neither streaming nor selling physical media is "worth it" for the parent company. Setting up even a simplified BD release takes tons of money because it's not as simple as the copyright owner taking ready to use final renditions and burning it to a disk, there's a whole process that goes into taking the masters and getting the highest possible quality digital copies off them, encoding appropriately for the disks, etc., and that's not even mentioning the physical production of the disks, cases, booklets, etc., and getting a distribution deal with the right sellers and so on. What seems like a no brainer "you have a product, I want to buy that product, sell me that product" isn't so simple after all. Same goes for streaming albeit differently. The rights owner needs to create a streaming compatible release from the master (or sometimes even from the existing physical copy masters!), pay residuals after every playback, AND it has to bring new viewers to the platform for it to be profitable. Adding content just because existing users demand it - users who will 95-99% of the time will still stick with the platform even if they don't get what they want - is not profitable, as it brings in no extra revenue. Then there's licensing. A lot of TV shows and movies are stuck in perpetual licensing hell because even though the trademark and franchise ownership lies with one company, long term rights usage has been sold to third parties as a way to have the IP generate revenue. Foe example, Paramount didn't start their own streaming for years because all their IP has been sold for 5-7 year terms to e.g. Netflix. Why start a platform if you can literally not put your own product there? Or take HBO - since all Warner Brothers licensing was done in 10 year exclusive blocks with SkyTV, HBO (Go, Max, Plus, etc.) literally couldn't enter the UK market because ALL the content was licensed out to another company who was promised exclusive rights within the UK for that time period... I fully agree that going after piracy when you're not willing to provide your content for legal procurement, is a bit hypocritical, and shouldn't be a thing.

At that quality of MP3 you'd really need either a track that specifically pushes the limits of the codec on technicalities, or a one in a million hearing + high precision monitors. Albeit FLAC is generally a better option still because it compresses things losslessly, reducing raw file size 50-70% (comparable to MP3 at 128kbps bitrate) and is a royalty-free, meaning it can be freely implemented as a hardware codec. For example, a bunch of microcontrollers in the ESP32 family have built in FLAC codecs that outperform their MP3 counterparts, meaning a FLAC library can be directly streamed to them, and with the right DAC combo, one can build inexpensive, low power adapters to hook their existing AV systems up to Sonos-style streaming. And with many AV systems supporting bidirectional RS232 (or other serial) communications for controlling the system and querying it's state, you can literally smartify them completely AND provide high quality audio streams to them.

Many. If you get deliveries and they're mishandled, you have a recording of it. If someone comes to your door when you're not home, you can talk to them. You can also set up local AI alerts (AI here is mostly used for facial recognition) e.g. to alert you if your MIL comes around uninvited, or if your kids sneak out at 2am, and so on. Once you begin appreciating a home CCTV camera setup (fully local mind you), you'll see the benefit of having your doorbell video-ed up as well.

What you lose is audience. People often aren't willing to replatform for a single creator.

Agreeing/coming to an agreement, versus the "left" side constantly arguing. Japan et al is a very societally conservative country and considers the typical right-wing mob/sheep mentality preferable to the left's constant debates.

I'd say that McD's patties are super small. Your average patty will be around 6-8oz, so 170-230g, which is much closer to your initial number of 1600 parties per cow.

That count is way off. An average cow is 600kg, and yields 36-48% in pure meat, so around 250kg. McDonald's standard patty is 45g, while larger patties - say, like, the Quarter Pounder - go up to 120g. Presuming 2/3 of all burgers per cow are regular, and 1/3 are Quarter Pounder size, then we have a simple formula to solve: 2x*0.045kg + x*0.120kg = 250kg That makes X approximately 1190, so the total number of burgers is ~3570, over double of your calculations.

Some men call women they failed to get with easy, just because other men had more success with her. These insults are almost never about the women themselved but the men trying to make themselves feel better about their failure.

Because consumer sales is slow and expensive. What do you think costs more? Building RAM sticks for individual users who'll pay $200-300 per 8/16 DRAM modules, or building sticks for enterprise customers who in one single order will spend millions of USD? Also latter requires no fancy packaging, marketing, or variations in the product.

Not really. A room by definition is a subsection of a structure meant for human inhabitation, one that is in some way separated from the rest of the interior subsections. Saunas are generally completely separate structures that aren't meant for general inhabitation.
