No, don’t do that. Some browsers check if your timezone is in check and if not then they refuse to load HTTPS webpages.

Not the browsets fault, but the cettificates for transport encryption don’t match with a wrong system time. And privacy gained through this is likely nonexistent. Rather, check Librewolf’s policies.js

I think there is a line to be drawn between what is theoretically better and what is meaningfully useful. It is realistically not useful information for an attacker to know what country you are from b

Heh, I wish it was +5:30 It’s UTC +5:45, and my country’s the only one using it. That’s ~30 million people. My main fear is not being pinpointed as my personal identity, but the fact that that serves as a perfect fingerprint metric, rare enough to stick out. (felt safe enough to reveal, as i do not expect this account to be tied back to me personally)

Is it a good idea to change my system timezone to UTC+0 for additional privacy?

I use a VPN and/or Tor to do the majority of my websurfing/streaming/torrenting. Some can (notably web browsers*) read your local system time to access your timezone. And, I happen to live in… let’s just say a very “narrow” timezone, my country of origin can be trivially pinpointed if you take a look at the UTC offset. I know Firefox has a setting to spoof my timezone to UTC, but the chromium browsers do not have that option (at least no options i could find after a fairly extensive search), and I don’t even know if all of the other programs I have are reading them or not, such as, for example, my matrix client. So, solution I came up with: do a timedatectl set-timezone UTC on the device. I can separately make my desktop clock do a little timezone conversion so no worries about time disorientation. This fixes the issue with most apps not allowing timezone spoofing too. Honestly, now that I’ve typed all that^^ out, this is beginning to sound like an unnecessary schizo post that goes WAY beyond my threat model XD. Still, I’d love to hear anyone else’s thoughts on it. Ideas to improve upon it are appreciated too.

NoScript will improve your privacy by a lot, and will make webpages load faster, since it stops stylish and tracker-ridden JS. If a webpage breaks, you can flick a few buttons to temporarily allow JS.

Can’t you just use Ublock with advanced mode on and have the same thing as NoScript?

Afaik, UbO will disable JS for entire tabs at a time. With noscript you can allow the bare minimum number of servers on a given tab/webpage access to load JS, and with a little practice you’ll begin to notice the common ad/tracker domains that seem to want some JS injected in just about every site you visit.

What I want is pretty simple, be able to reboot any computer (ex: work computer) on my USB live system and be able to access my files, my emails Tails with persistent storage is a absolutely a good solution for this specific usecase. It’s designed for it and provides a free and secure encrypted proxy solution (Tor). On top of that, your internet activity will likely help the activists who really need Tor by “mixing” your traffic with theirs. Tails has thunderbird installed by default, you can connect it to your email account (but do take note that proton only seems to allow 3rd party client integration if you install their bridge app thingy) If it is your own computer, in your home network, just install the necessary apps in any old distro. Doesn’t matter

Tor over VPN is a fine solution if you want to hide it from your ISP, but I don’t think you should install extra stuff on TailsOS. Consider using Tor Browser + UblockOrigin on your own PC over a VPN, it’s pretty much the same thing if you’ll just be browsing online.
