The sabotage narrative did feel weak when I was listening to Natasha Bernal talking. Its probably not sabotage, its just their data is wank and the employees aren’t paid enough to care to fix it.

Good. It is morally and ethically the right thing to do. Also, did you know it is ethically and morally correct to firebomb datacenters? They're being used for structural violence, and are basically piñatas.

Curl does exactly one thing and it does it very well. Systemd aspires to do all the things and does nothing very well.

I don’t remember anyone -asking- for systemd, I just remember being subjected to it at the time it started getting popular. If systemd is the solution, I want my problem back.

Thats wild, I’m used to zero rating on basic food goods in the UK. Unless its chocolate. That’s taxable. Unless its a chocolate cake, thats a basic food again. But a chocolate biscuit attracts tax. Which was the whole thing about jaffa cakes and their tax status was about. Its a cake, therefore a basic food.

Catering, Alcohol, confectionary, crisps and snacks, hot food, sports drinks, ice cream and soft drinks are taxed.

Its all a bit complicated, but the more you can imagine someone eating it in 1910 the more likely its zero rated.

I have. Never had your machine just sit there and refuse to boot because a network share is down? Or because the wifi isn’t connected yet? Or because its waiting on some nebulous thing until timeout… Never had to crawl through journalctl to diagnose things and wanted to claw your own eyes out in frustration? You are a fortunate person.

Its built antithetically to the unix principles, it uses binlogs, its slow and its a big ol’ bloated mess on low-memory embedded devices, and seemingly is creeping into the whole system. Also the original author has since fucked off to microslop so I don’t care what he thinks or does. It, as a project, also bent the fucking knee.

and its STILL insultingly expensive for what it is. A laptop with one of the worst modern keyboards with a dated ARM phone soc.. Where have I heard that before. If the pinebook can exist for $200 in tiny volumes, the macbook with its massive production volume is absolutely a slap in the face. The BOM on that thing can't be more than $200-250 even with the wasteful packaging and marketing. That should be filling the $399 space the eee pc laptops did. The costs should have diminished down by now.

I was just imagining that situation and thought to myself that if only people were both cool and smooth enough to make casual unjudgemental conversation with the preacherman in the checkout line in that moment.. What a world we could live in, if only everyone could stop being shitty to one another.

Short of a botnet

Well, yeah. Or a browser extension that can be circulated.

Generating images and video are hella computationally expensive. requesting it to make millions of junk images will make a non-zero economic impact.

Its also why sora got killed off.

The carbon intensity wont make the product go away, but the economic cost will.

If I recall, it was something Ed Zitron said but I can't find the quote, so it might not be. The implication that the cost of delivering that $20 user account was approximately $1800 worth of compute.

They wanted companies to normalise a dollar spend on tokens equivalent to half a dev salary per dev.

They want to pay you in it too

Its not consumers they charge. They were talking about businesses budgeting about 50% of a developer salary per developer on tokens. A consumer $20 claude code account gets about $1800 worth of tokens, iirc.

The venture capital is just piles of money in other rich peoples pockets. As I understand it, the AI bubble is funded by massive amounts of saudi oil money anyway. Its kinda like the jokers cash bonfire, but its Sam Altman pleading for more of it while eagerly dousing it in gasoline.
