A software developer and Linux nerd, living in Germany. I’m usually a chill dude but my online persona doesn’t always reflect my true personality. Take what I say with a grain of salt, I usually try to be nice and give good advice, though.

I’m into Free Software, selfhosting, microcontrollers and electronics, freedom, privacy and the usual stuff. And a few select other random things as well.

If it's just you, and you're fine with the regular login... Just disable signup and don't add more authentication mechanisms like oauth/openID. I'm using nginx as a reverse proxy as well. For now, I added a lot of "deny" directives to ban all the address ranges from Tencent, Alibaba, OpenAI. It's not a 100% solution, but works well enough for me. I'm mostly worried about AI crawlers causing too much load on my server. And it stopped since, so I don't think I'm gonna need Anubis and all these extra things in front if my applications. If you like you can look into solutions like a web application firewall like Crowdsec.

I think the latest outcry with LLMs unmasking pseudonymous users wasn’t due to their writing style and grammar. But they used the information and facts the posts contained. You’d basically need to switch up your writing style. But then also stop blogging about your favorite Star Trek series, and pick a new hobby. And claim you’re a nurse from Uganda and random new things.

Depends. Sometimes you’ll get a PC magazine or blog cover an upcoming laptop and test Linux compatibility. Or someone writes a long Reddit post after they got it, or updates the Arch Wiki. There definitely are ways to learn about Linux-compatibility with new models. We used to have Amazon comments and reviews…Just be super cautious with all the AI bots and fake comparison sites out there. And it’s a bit more complicated with gaming stuff. Sometimes they’ll add a weird webcam, or unsupported RGB LED controller, or have weird quirks in the firmware. Some other model lines like a business laptop from Dell or Lenovo tend to be just fine and you’ll get 100% Linux compatibility. There’s no guarantee, but after a few Linux nerds blogged aboit it you should be fine.

I think the browser extension “LocalCDN” helps a bit with all the tracking done by webfonts and javascript libraries. It’s supposed to cache them and avoid unnecessary requests.

This is the permissive vs copyleft debate. And it’s old as time. I suppose there’s a lot of nuance with licensing. If you’re a company at the receiving end, you probably love permissive licenses. They’re easy, offer the maximum amount of flexibility and freedom. It’s so short you probably don’t even need a team of lawyers… If you write software, it’s a bit more complicated. Do you want to cater to those people, make it as easy as possible to adopt your software? Then maybe consider BSD/Apache/MIT. Do you want to build a community, stop your competitors from taking code? Want to try to ensure it stays open? Then maybe consider a copyleft license.

Hehe. It depends a bit on the social group. But most people will be aware of it before I even open my mouth… Dunno, maybe it’s the long hair, or Debian t-shirt or something like that. But I rarely have to disclose the fact I’m a nerd 😉

Sure. I'm not entirely sure how PCIE works these days. But in it good old days we had methods to read pretty much arbitrary memory regions via PCIE or early Thunderbolt(?). I just figured it'd be massively complicated to wait for the user to pull something on the screen, do computationally expensive OCR, some AI image detection to puzzle documents back together, and then you'd only get a fraction of what's really stored on the computer and you'd still need a way to send that information home... When you could just pick a plethora of easy options like read all the files from the harddisk and send just them somewhere. I think it's far more likely they do some easy and straightforward solution. And it'd be more effective as well.

Yes. I wouldn't focus too much on someone being able to tell which map you're playing, and which color your car has in Need For Speed. It's way more unsettling what's in networking equipment. Or inside an Intel Management Engine, and the firmware blobs of all the computer chips. Or the software running on it.
