The defense of @hochstenbach PhD thesis “Scholarly Communication Using the Decentralized Web” at Ghent University was a total blast. Obviously because of the mere quality of the presented research. I was happy to learn that a new #Signposting library is under active development: Compass is a lightweight Java library for validating and interpreting FAIR Signposting. It comes with:
* defensive RFC 8288 model-level validation,
* FAIR Signposting Level 1 and Level 2 recipe validation,
* semantic views and Link Set (RFC 9264) processing.

@jyasskin @pointlessone A little context: Significant Memento infrastructure was operated as an official service of the LANL Research Library. That included a web archive aggregator (that leveraged Memento interoperability) covering the holdings of 30-ish web archives, Robust Links tools, and APIs for both. A few months ago, the Research Library decided to pull the plug on the infrastructure. There are contacts with @internetarchive aimed at resurrecting some components.

@jyasskin A date in data-versionurl is the snapshot date of the URL of the version resource that precedes it in the list. That’s e.g. the URL of a resource in web archive A. In case that URL is no longer accessible in web archive A (result of takedown request, for example), then the date can be used to find alternative version resources in other web archives.

@jyasskin that’s part of the memento protocol. It’s datetime content negotiation. That can also work for datetime access to resources in eg wikis, btw. But, thus far, mainly web archives have implemented support.

@jyasskin @pointlessone yes, correct. we’re currently working with @internetarchive on an enhanced version of the Robust Links spec, which will need an updated, yet backwards compatible, implementation. The most significant challenge is to seamlessly get the annotations into html. Requires authoring/editing tool support.

In the olden days, people in charge of institutional IT probably would have just gone ahead, give it a try, see what happens. In today’s “professionalized” IT setups, that likely requires a feasibility assessment, a user requirement study, a policy draft, a multi-year budget prognosis, and endless meetings (probably forgetting some) before the first stone can be laid. By which time Microsoft 365 offers Mastadon instances, which defeats the whole centralization idea. Apologies for the sarcasm.

It occurs to me that academic institutions could set up Mastadon servers as a communication conduit at the service of their constituents. In doing so, they would likely give a significant boost to ongoing efforts that aim for a decentralized scholarly communication ecology by familiarizing users with the possibility and benefits of decentralized approaches.
