I do love the snark in Last Week in AWS 😆

"Automate AWS Lambda Runtime Upgrades with AWS Transform custom - Imagine spending 20-30% of your engineering effort manually upgrading Lambda runtimes when you could instead spend that time learning a new AI tool that does it for you, poorly, and then fixing what it broke. AWS Transform custom: because technical debt needs its own technical debt. As a bonus, a quick look at the Transform pricing page indicates it will also incur actual debt."

🙃

We're going to be hiring someone new. And as the senior Data Engineer, I'm going to get to lead the recruitment.

I'm currently working out how I balance my response if a candidate asks about GenAI coding tools.

I don't want to burst out laughing. But I also don't want to run away screaming 🤔

(This is Data Engineering, Sir/Madam. We care about data quality, consistency and robustness in these parts)

I see articles like "What Claude Code ACTUALLY Chooses" (via Last Week in AWS) and I wonder… how can ANYONE with even half an ounce professional integrity trust these GenAI systems?

The behaviour is inconsistent. It rolls its own auth without a second thought. Sometimes it's absolutely dead-set on ONLY using the market leader and sometimes it's dead-set on using the latest who-knows-if-it'll-last library (and sometimes it flips that behaviour between model generations).

I'm sure someone will want to whine about "but they gave it an open prompt without guidance". But that doesn't FIX anything in its behaviour. It just makes some of the problems less obvious.

Ugh. Some of my website config and defences are getting a bit gnarly and convoluted. I kinda want to tear it all down and start again.

Except that a) I don't have the time for that and b) it won't get any better if I don't have better testing, and I don't know how best to optimise and test most of the problem areas 😐

(Example: Big configs of SpamAssassin rules and contact form filtering and script kiddy bot blocking)

BBC News: Race on to establish globally recognised 'AI-free' logo

Yes! This! If people can't be bothered to write books or make movies then people should know so that they can avoid bothering to read/watch/buy them.

The day that I have to start using GenAI for coding is the day that I give up and find a different career. If I can't be arsed to write the code then what's the point in being a programmer?

Bad: Apparently the SSH daemon on my web server died
Good: I've got Puppet running, so it got restarted
Bad: The server is running Ubuntu, so I'm not convinced that it won't happen again
Good: I'm also running Tmux, so my terminal session resumed perfectly 🙂

Got a really weird spam message via my contact form.

"Woke up to find all the analyse bags shredded on the pantry floor. The

And… what? Not sure if it's complete word salad or if it's some weird LLM crap, or bad translations and odd word choice!

It's almost as if so-called "AI" in kids' toys (and basically everywhere else) ISN'T ACTUALLY INTELLIGENT AND IS ACTUALLY A FUCKING DUMB AND DANGEROUS IDEA 🧐

But hey, the investors are happy, so what's a little societal damage between friends? 😑

Today in "bad analogies" and "predicting the worst and least appealing future":

* "If I instruct someone else to cut some wood for me then I still cut that wood, because what's the difference between an autonomous, inconsistent agent and a predictable band saw, really?"

* "Apps won't be a thing in the future, it'll be sensors and inconsistent LLM glue all the way down"

We got into Warhammer in 1995 (peak Warhammer/40K 2nd/Mordheim/Titan Legions/Blood Bowl/etc). Now, at nearly 40, my brother is getting back into painting.

He was in his local store. The manager is a similar age but started more 2000s, so he remembers some bits of Red Period and the turn of the millennium games but is only vaguely aware of other bits.

While getting his Mini of the Month, my brother was educating the 20-something staffer on the Red Period style that he was going to use. And then mentioned John Blanche. And the guy goes "who?" 😮

My brother had to call over the manager for this flagrant shortcoming. But apparently Blanche is part of Deep Lore that they don't cover in standard staff training.

But… it feels like working for the Tolkien Estate and not knowing the work of Alan Lee or John Howe.

Or working on the Man United Old Trafford tour and saying "Eric Canto-who? And Peter Schmi-something? Nope, dunno" 😐

It's nice to see that Games Workshop doesn't feel it necessary to ruin some classic designs! I remember when the old Vyper came out and they had that art on the cover of White Dwarf.

I *loved* that art! It's probably in my top three of "art I'd get from Warhammer Art (if I had more wall space)". I've obviously already got 40K 2nd Ed and Epic 40K covers, plus the Emperor's Palace.

BBC News: Why fake AI videos of UK urban decline are taking over social media - BBC News

There's no point in expecting these arseholes to take responsibility or show contrition. The only solution is educating people so that they don't fall for it and/or legislation around social media algorithms.

That or we wait for the "AI" bubble to pop. If they ever had to pay actual cost for these videos then they're would be so much less of it.

I thought I understood the colour coded bar on the right-hand side of the Super G coverage. It seemed quite obvious (and nicely detailed).

And then there's people with a section that's almost all green, a little yellow and maybe one gate is light red. And then they lose 0.01s over the sector!

Trying to fix the power connector battery-powered device. All I need is two crimp terminals to put on the wires and slot into the connector housing.

RS won't let me buy less than 250. Farnell will send me 10 (in case I screw up a few times) but then charge £8.99 delivery PLUS VAT! 😐

(There's one seller on Amazon who only charges £2.20 postage… but £5 per item!)
