We had a power cut last night 'cause we live in America and it was windy, and we ended up going to sleep at like half ten. Woke up to the power restored and read this https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20260306-the-wake-up-tricks-people-used-before-alarm-clocks and felt oddly wistful for the week-long power cut following the fifteen-minute storm last April, where I'd go to sleep shortly after dark each night and it was Basically Lovely

Starting to understand why folk block Brave users.
Was chatting on the Island about the slopbot attack, mentioned and linked to a great article by a Fedi person about mitigating slopbots, Brave Dude says yo is this article gibberish for anyone else, I say are you using Brave, he says yeah, I say yeah that'll be the problem and link him to https://www.spacebar.news/stop-using-brave-browser/ 'cause I know that this particular Fedi person blocks Brave browser by default.
Dude then proceeds to try to argue with ME about how you can turn off the scams and yeah the CEO is bad but everybody is bad, and I'm like... dude that's not my website, I don't know why you're telling me this. Pop firefox or something on there if you wanna read it, otherwise don't worry about it 'cause I'm too lazy to bother blocking brave on my own site.
But, like, I've very definitely noticed that with other software, when folk go "Yo check this out, these are the horrifying reasons why I don't use it / it's a big scam," most people go "Oh shit what're you using instead gimme recs," but brave bros will pour out an essay about why the scams don't matter because it's just such a good browser (chrome with a hat on)

Dan top tip, give Dokuwiki a go if you want a wiki but Mediawiki looks like overkill or too hard to set up.
Mediawiki's what wikipedia uses and it's great but you probably don't need to use what wikipedia uses.
Dokuwiki is way easier, doesn't even need a database, all your pages are stored as .txt files. If you've already got a bunch of .txt files with your brain dumps on them, and you've been going "Man, it'd be nice if I could link these together," then it's a natural fit.
Even if you get fancy with dokuwiki formatting to make your pages look nice on the wiki, the .txt files are still readable and understandable in your text editor. For example //these are italics// and === this is a heading === and [[coolnewpage|this is a link]]. If Dokuwiki goes all wonky then I've still got perfectly good .txt files that I can wrangle in my text editor just like before.

Back in my day if a chat service went to shit we'd just delete it and use one of the six other chat programs on our computers that all our mates were spread between, and it really *was* a "just" in that scenario because everyone we talked to also had at least two other chat programs to talk to their other mates, we routed around enshittification effortlessly like a stream around the rocks

Voice/video/images/groupchats OK, Jabber servers federate like fedi, chinwag can talk to trashserver can talk to disroot, doesn't matter where you sign up, or use Snikket or Prosody and run your own chat server on a proper server in the cloud or a shit old computer in your basement and give it a funny/obscene name; for an app use Conversations from F-Droid on Android or Siskin on apple phones, if you like browser-based then check out conversejs, embed a chat box on your website that can talk to other chat boxes on other websites, I Just Think It's Neat)

Basically this morning I did my occasional foray into "Ugh, the world's doing that thing again, let's fix something," and I wondered if I could get an ereader from dead to ready within half an hour.
Firmware updates made it more like 40 minutes while the girls were chilling in their pillowfort but I got it done.
Felt good. Fixing things feels good.
