Ballpark comparison, if most people used LLM chat frequently: it would be as if we wiped out the energy savings of moving entire nations from incandescent light bulbs, to LED.

Apple suffers from a chronic inability to execute anything in a timely fashion, which occasionally and coincidentally turns out to be the right move. Bozo analysts then praise this as a bold move.

This kids book “What about digital tech” is chock full of disinformation, tech bro narratives, and AI booster talking points. I suppose they probably just lazily copy-pasta’d a bunch of tech news sites, but this is a horrible thing to inflict on kids.

All these people who haven’t actually read the California law, making big gestures against an imagined version of it.

Lol this thread about constant-time execution fills in the entire bingo card of futile mitigations: https://discourse.llvm.org/t/rfc-constant-time-coding-support/87781/44

I get that you're often stuck making the best out of the layer in the platform stack you're stuck with, but if you're mitigating these kinds of attacks, high-level code is the wrong starting point in the first place.

You know you’ve been routing a PCB in kicad too long, when you look at map directions, and think it would be shorter if you just used a via or two.

Occasionally slip a search into Google, and check how things are going in AI-is-going-great land. I see that numbers, counting, and comparison are still beyond an LLM's capabilities:

"Avoid Sub-millimeter Vias: Use standard via sizes. While they can do smaller, a 0.2mm hole with a 0.35mm–0.4mm diameter is safer."

Uh huh.

"Avoid Sub-5mil Traces: Standardize your traces to 4mil or greater. Thinner traces are more fragile."

You keep using that word "sub"...

Oh look the "AI" boosters are all out in force trying to tell us that LLMs are energy efficient, really, when you look in the context of the entire world's energy usage.

(While simultaneously being weirdly proud of how they're having to significantly increase energy production for entire nations, turn back on nuclear power stations, and build gas turbines because they need more)

Putin was in serious danger of running out of money to pay his generals—the whole point of sanctions—and Trump (and the entire cowardly international community) just went and bailed him out.

I guess (marketing term) "AI" in the Linux kernel is a self-limiting disease, because at some point Clod will simply delete the repository, or create a branch of the first ever commit with a one line comment, and rebase the entire history.

Me: 'They see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water, and people buy it from them on a meter'

Sam Altman: "We see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water, and people buy it from us on a meter"

They just went right out and said it. That much a psychopath that it feels _right_ to say it, on the record?

RE: https://wandering.shop/@cstross/115967024834089192 It's worse than that. Mandatory, authoritatively checked age verification is a short, slippery slope directly to mandatory, authoritatively checked internet access. This isn't hyperbole. Gating VPN access is just a short stop in between.

RE: https://social.vivaldi.net/@LonM/115966748145817371 UK PEOPLE: this is REALLY IMPORTANT. If the government bans under-16s from using VPNs, then logically they must intend to REQUIRE AGE VERIFICATION FOR ALL VPN USE. Which will affect adults too! *Your* privacy and right to anonymous web browsing is at risk!
