@andresmh@hci.social Cognitively it’s very difficult for me to process documents in latex/overleaf/text editors + I depend on TTS to proofread my writing so im stuck with word. Mendeley/Zotero solved the references problem for me all these years but this TAPs process makes publishing ACM conference papers so painful.

@andresmh@hci.social There has to be another way. In the last two years I’ve dreaded the TAPs process, and never successfully gotten a document to process correctly. Yesterday, I spent at least 5 work hours tagging each name and year in every citation, then resolving every single error e.g “surname has a space after” before the document finally validated.

Anyone have an easy time formatting references for the ACM TAPs submission using Word? I’ve been at this for hours and I’m convinced there has to be a better way.

3. Twitter is much more than an academic/professional space. Good space for comic relief, learning about topics that you have no idea you’ll love (and therefore won’t seek it out), serving your intersectional identities organically in a way that seems impossible to recreate without long term time investments.

2. Twitter still has critical mass, at least internationally, and is the fastest way to learn about major events like elections, dangerous situation that affect friends and family. People learn things that happen in real time faster than some people on the ground and can warn loved ones to get to safety.

1. A large chunk of your audience is non-US/non-CS, who don’t understand/care about the “fuss” we’ve made about Twitter’s new ownership… therefore have no incentive to lose the social capital they’ve built over years. Even when they care, many people live in actual dictatorships and Elon’s shenanigans is child’s play compared to what they’ve been through.

Launched our CS Ambassadors this week where we train afterschool staff (regardless of their background) to provide consistent CS Education to their students 1-2 times a week! Was such an awesome week watching them in action, nervousness and all, doing such an amazing job.

@scerruti@csed.social Also, students had a data file of 500 sentences where the trial sentences were pulled from. They were not allowed to bias predictive text to this dataset though … so predictive text was based on publicly available probability models on frequently occurring letters/words in the English language.

@scerruti@csed.social Most students used MacBook pros and they were only allowed to use touchpads. I saw some test with windows machines and they performed similarly.
For each trial, students had to type 4 sentences at 95% or better accuracy. Timer started right before the first letter and ended after trial complete. Each keyboard got 20 trials total from novice users to calculate the aggregate WPM… I assume performance will be better with expert users.
