We've actually just added AppImage as another option. It does happen to be the only Linux option that we can easily and directly distribute ourselves. As an added benefit, it allows Linux users to run multiple versions of KiCad on the same machine. Thanks for the note!
KiCad has released a new packaging format for Linux. You can know run the latest KiCad using AppImage. This is still in testing, so please give it a spin and let us know if something doesn't work correctly. You can find them at https://downloads.kicad.org
