@pauldoo@mastodon.scot @adamw@fosstodon.org @doti@pl.catboyindustries.co ohh, wasn't aware of that, interesting, thx! But I guess in the end that and the "sometimes" in your sentence contribute to the "neither fish nor fowl" aspect I mentioned initially that makes it hard for outsiders to understand what to expect.

@adamw@fosstodon.org yeah, granted, thx for mentioning it and sorry for omitting that. But well mesa, thunderbird and a lot of smaller packages have no such exception but are kinda rolling. That and the exceptions itself lead to a "neither fish nor fowl" picture from the outside. And to me it feels a bit like this is becoming a problem worth addressing sooner or later. @doti@pl.catboyindustries.co I don't think using "they" is helpful here. Fedora has a policy, that says: "As a result, we should avoid major updates of packages within a stable release. Updates should aim to fix bugs, and not introduce features, particularly when those features would materially affect the user or developer experience." – https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fesco/Updates_Policy/ But the maintainers for some packages do not follow it – often for good reasons I'd say. And that leads to a odd mix for Fedora as a whole.

@matttbe@fosstodon.org yeah, this isn't really something new. And while reading the post I like many times before actually wondered how much my go-to supermarket is actually using this or some other technique[1] to track me. [1] I guess these days video surveillance + AI might be or slowly become the preferred method; they could use wifi, too.

Martin Stransky highlights some recent major achievements for #Firefox on Linux: ""HDR video playback support, reworked rendering for fractionally scaled displays, and asynchronous rendering implementation. All this progress was enabled by advances in the Wayland compositor ecosystem, with new features implemented by Mutter and KWin.

[…]

And there are even more challenges waiting for us Firefox Linux hackers:

Wayland session restore […]
Utilize the fractional-scale-v2 protocol when it becomes available. […]
Vulkan video support via the ffmpeg decoder to enable hardware decoding on NVIDIA hardware.""

PNG is back!

https://www.programmax.net/articles/png-is-back/ (by Chris Blume)

A new PNG spec was just released! […]

[…] After 20 years of stagnation, PNG is back with renewed vigor!

What's new?

* Proper HDR support (future‐proof, too!)

* Finally recognizes APNGs (animations!)

* Officially supports Exif data

* General tidying up—fixing errata, clarifications, etc.
