They should be the default for solar installations and grid-level storage What ever happened to flow batteries? They were supposed to be the really cheap low density option for grid storage.

Which would make sense if those Italians were from the Aosta Valley, since food and other culture doesn’t stop hard at the border. But I’m betting they’re not.

Since we’re talking sci-fi, this is Asimov in 1980:

There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.

One major issue is that it’ll expose all regional differences in pronunciation in the spelling and now we’ll disagree about the spelling instead.

The cheese slicer is a great Norwegian invention and much used in all the Nordics. And The Netherlands. And Germany? I think it mostly boils down to “what is cheese” to you. If you think you can even have an argument about whether you should cut “cheese” with a cheese slicer, then you come from a place where they make sense. In my fridge I’ve got parmigiano, gorgonzola dolce and I just finished a rare piece of emmenthal. A slicer would have been useful only with the last one of those. But my sandwiches! I hear all my fellow northerners cry. They’re great with brie or toma. No slicer needed.

I don’t think you can just add those together since an added person will mostly also be an added car. In fact, since cars grew faster than people, perhaps there are fewer pedestrians now. We can’t really say.

It’s probably time to put the kettle on and stay away from the Internet, and perhaps other people on general, until you’re feeling better.
