@realcaseyrollins@noauthority.social @hpod16@eupolicy.social they are indeed, or an equivalent of them. They're like any other post/reply, only restricted between the 2 (or more) participants and not e2e encrypted.
The issue is that most users are looking for a 'DM' or 'Message' button and struggle to understand that this is how you 'privately' message someone.

- Server selection onboarding. This is number one, you'll find plenty of posts online with confused users. Though Mastodon works on improving it soon it seems.
- Limited search and discovery (bottlenecked by the server)
- Broken uploads because of dead CDNs
- Confusing 'DM' feature
These all make sense to me and are ok, but casual Joe will struggle.
